Overview

The United States has two distinct multilateral career centers. New York hosts United Nations Headquarters and much of the Secretariat's diplomatic, political, legal, conference and administrative work. Washington, D.C. is the main market for the World Bank Group, IMF and OAS, with a stronger concentration of development finance, economics, research and regional policy roles.

International employment ecosystem

Treat New York and Washington as separate job markets. New York applications often concern UN Secretariat departments, funds and programmes, permanent missions and headquarters operations. Washington applications more often involve development banks, macroeconomic institutions and inter-American bodies. A vacancy's recruitment category determines whether it is internationally recruited, locally recruited or tied to existing US work authorization.

How to apply for UN and international jobs in United States

1

Separate New York from Washington, D.C.

+

Search by institution as well as location. New York is led by the UN Secretariat and headquarters teams of UN funds and programmes; Washington, D.C. is led by the World Bank Group, IMF, OAS, IDB and PAHO. These employers do not share one recruitment account, grade structure or application form.

2

Choose the correct recruitment category

+

For UN Secretariat vacancies, distinguish internationally recruited Professional posts from locally recruited General Service roles and from temporary appointments, consultancies and internships. World Bank Group and IMF titles follow their own systems. Check nationality, mobility and local-recruitment restrictions before preparing documents.

3

Build the application in the employer's system

+

UN Secretariat applications begin through UN Careers and the linked applicant platform. World Bank Group applications are submitted online through its Careers system; it does not accept applications by email or post. Complete structured profile fields rather than relying on an attached résumé to supply missing dates, duties or qualifications.

4

Show evidence for the institution's work

+

For New York, connect achievements to multilateral policy, programme oversight, political or legal analysis, conference operations, communications or headquarters administration. For Washington, show the analytical or operational product requested: economic research, lending operations, investment, safeguards, procurement, sector policy, data or corporate services.

5

Confirm status before making relocation plans

+

A G-4 visa is for a qualifying appointment at a designated international organization; it is not a general route for every contractor or locally hired role. Ask the employer which immigration status applies to the exact offer, whether dependants are covered, and whether the post instead requires existing US work authorization.

Work authorization and appointment status

International appointments, G-4 visa arrangements and ordinary US employment authorization are different routes. Locally recruited posts may require existing authorization; confirm the status in the vacancy and written offer.

United States international careers FAQs

Is New York or Washington, D.C. better for international organization careers?

They are different markets. New York concentrates UN Secretariat, diplomacy and headquarters programme work. Washington concentrates multilateral development finance, economics and inter-American institutions. Choose by mandate and recruitment system, not by city prestige.

Do all international organization jobs in the United States include a G-4 visa?

No. G-4 status applies to qualifying appointments at designated international organizations. Local recruitment, consulting and other arrangements may use different rules or require existing authorization. The employer must confirm the status attached to the offer.

Are UN General Service jobs in New York internationally recruited?

General Service and related posts are generally locally recruited, unlike internationally recruited Professional posts. Always read the vacancy's category and eligibility language because appointment types, temporary roles and agency systems can differ.

Can one candidate profile cover the UN, World Bank and IMF?

No. The UN Secretariat, World Bank Group and IMF operate separate recruitment systems. Reuse accurate career evidence, but create and maintain the structured profile required by each employer and submit a vacancy-specific application.

Which language is normally required?

English is the principal working language in most New York and Washington vacancies, but UN language posts, regional portfolios and stakeholder roles may require another language. Only the individual notice establishes the required level.
