What is a UN salary step?

  • A UN salary step determines your specific pay rate within a job grade. For internationally recruited Professional (P) and Director (D) levels, there are typically 13 steps.
  • Moving up a step, usually annually or biennially, provides a higher base salary for satisfactory service.
  • You will generally advance to the next step each year up to Step VII for P-1 to P-5, and every two years thereafter from Step VIII to XIII. Progression depends on satisfactory performance and is not guaranteed when performance requirements are not met.
  • If you move to a higher grade, the new step is calculated to provide a net base salary increase at least equal to what you would have received from a two-step increase in the lower grade.

Questions

UN salary FAQs

What is the average salary at the United Nations?+

There is no single UN average salary. Professional staff pay depends on grade, step and duty-station post adjustment. For example, the official 2026 P-3 net base scale runs from USD 71,335 at step 1 to USD 92,127 at step 13 before post adjustment.

What is UN post adjustment?+

Post adjustment is a duty-station cost-of-living amount added to the net base salary of internationally recruited Professional and higher-category staff. The calculator applies the official ICSC percentage to the selected net base salary.

Are UN salaries tax-free?+

The published net base figures are after the UN common system's internal staff assessment. National tax treatment can depend on the employing organization, duty station and staff member's circumstances, so the calculator should not be treated as tax advice.

Do General Service staff use this worldwide scale?+

No. General Service salaries are locally surveyed and published in local-currency scales for individual duty stations. This calculator covers the worldwide Professional and higher categories from P-1 through D-2.

Do UN consultants use the P or D salary scale?+

No. Consultants and individual contractors are engaged under different rules and fees are determined by the contract and organization. Their compensation should not be estimated with this staff salary calculator.

Is this the final amount paid into a staff member's account?+

No. It estimates net base salary plus post adjustment. Pension, medical insurance, allowances, dependency status, hardship, mobility, rental subsidy and other additions or deductions can change actual net pay.
