Diplomatic vehicle reference · Updated August 2026

Diplomatic Plate Codes by Country, Mission and Organisation

Identify CD, diplomatic, consular, UN and international-organisation vehicle codes across seven national plate systems. Browse each host-country directory by code, country, mission or acronym.

Country-specific systems

Seven diplomatic plate systems in one directory

There is no worldwide diplomatic plate standard. Each host country keeps its own registration logic, so the issuing system must be established before a code is interpreted.

Before using a code

Start with the country that issued the plate

Diplomatic vehicle codes are assigned by the host country, not by a worldwide authority. A number such as 03 or 29 can therefore identify different entities in Switzerland, Kenya or another registration system.

Use the plate design, national format, canton or status marker to establish the issuing system first. Then open that country below and match the entity code—not the vehicle's individual serial number—to the represented country, mission or organisation.

Directory context: each code belongs to the issuing system shown above. A matching number in another country can identify a different mission or organisation.

Diplomatic identifiers are assigned by the host country. Read the format before searching the code.

The essential distinction

What is a diplomatic vehicle registration plate?

A diplomatic plate is a host-country registration issued for an eligible vehicle connected to a foreign mission, consular post, permanent mission, accredited official or qualifying international organisation. Its appearance signals a special registration category; its code helps the issuing authority identify the represented entity.

The letters CD commonly refer to corps diplomatique, but they are not a universal code. Some countries use CD within the main registration, while others display separate badges or status letters.

The practical rule: identify the issuing country first, then decode the status marker, mission code and vehicle sequence.

A reliable four-step check

How to identify a diplomatic plate correctly

  1. 01

    Identify the host country

Use the plate design, canton, state or national markings—not the represented country’s flag.

  2. 02

    Find the status marker

Look for CD, CC, AT, CMD, C, K, UN, KX or the status letter used by that system.

  3. 03

    Isolate the entity code

Separate the mission or country identifier from the vehicle’s individual serial number.

  4. 04

    Use the right directory

Open the issuing country, then match the code with its country, mission or organisation.

Research and confidence

How the diplomatic plate database is verified

The directory separates confirmed reference data from developing entries and explains the checks used to maintain the collection.

01

Primary rules

Official vehicle-registration rules establish plate formats, eligible categories and the authority responsible for issuance.

02

Mission cross-checking

Foreign-ministry directories, mission lists and international-organisation records help confirm the represented entity and current naming.

03

Transparent confidence

Reviewed rows are checked against the maintained reference set. Developing entries remain visible without being presented as confirmed.

Important: codes can be reassigned and public lists can lag official records. A vehicle plate does not establish the driver’s personal identity, role or exact immunity.

Common questions

Diplomatic plate code FAQs

Clear answers to the questions most people ask before using a diplomatic vehicle code directory.

What do diplomatic plate codes identify?

Depending on the host country, a code can identify the represented state, embassy, consulate, permanent mission, United Nations entity or international organisation. The remaining characters usually describe status, registration location or an individual vehicle sequence.

Does CD mean the same thing in every country?

CD commonly derives from corps diplomatique, but plate layouts and eligibility differ by host country. France also uses CMD, C and K series; Switzerland uses CD, CC and AT categories; Kenya distinguishes CD, UN and KX formats.

Are diplomatic country codes the same as ISO country codes?

Usually not. Diplomatic vehicle codes are assigned within each host country’s registration system. The same number or letters can identify entirely different countries in Switzerland, Kenya, France or the United States.

Can I identify a diplomatic plate from only its number?

First identify the country where the plate was issued, then locate the identifying code in that country’s directory rather than treating the entire vehicle serial as the entity code. Country names, missions, organisations and acronyms are published alongside their assigned codes.

Does a diplomatic plate prove the driver has full immunity?

No. A plate identifies a specially registered vehicle, but the holder’s privileges and immunities depend on accreditation, role, status and applicable law. Do not infer an individual’s legal immunity from the plate alone.

Which countries does CD Plates support?

The current database covers Switzerland, Kenya, Austria, France, Germany, Italy and the United States. Switzerland and Kenya are the two fully reviewed reference sets; the other systems are maintained as developing public-source datasets.

Is this diplomatic plate database official?

No. It is an independently maintained educational reference assembled from official rules, public mission information, historical references, observed information and community corrections.

How often are diplomatic plate codes updated?

There is no universal update schedule. Missions open and close, states change names and authorities reassign codes. CD Plates reviews corrections and expands entries as reliable information becomes available.

Sources and editorial note

The format explanations use published material from the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Kenya Law, France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office and the US Department of State. The searchable code compilation is maintained independently by CD Plates using public sources, historical references, observed information and reviewed corrections.
