Plate anatomy
How to read a Swiss diplomatic plate
Swiss diplomatic registrations combine a status, canton, vehicle serial and represented-entity code. Find the final number in the directory above.
Status categories
What CD, CC and AT mean in Switzerland
Corps diplomatique
Qualifying mission and international-organisation service vehicles, diplomatic personnel and certain senior international officials with full status.
Corps consulaire
Consular vehicles and eligible career consular officials registered in the special consular series.
Administrative & technical
Eligible administrative and technical personnel of diplomatic missions in Bern. Geneva-based staff in comparable roles generally use ordinary plates.
Colour and place
Blue in Geneva, green in Bern
Blue CD plates
Used for permanent missions, delegations and international organisations in Geneva. Eligible vehicles can be registered in Geneva or Vaud according to the holder’s canton of residence and the competent authority.
Green CD plates
Used for embassies in Bern. The colour identifies the Swiss diplomatic registration context; it does not identify the represented country by itself.

Eligibility and limitations
Who can receive Swiss CD plates?
Current Swiss Mission guidance links personal CD registration to full diplomatic status and an FDFA legitimation card type B or C. Permanent missions, delegations and international organisations also use CD plates for eligible service vehicles. Registration is handled by the competent cantonal vehicle authority.
Employees without full diplomatic status use ordinary Swiss plates. Motorcycles also use ordinary plates. When a posting ends or status changes, the special plates and vehicle licence must be returned to the issuing authority or a Swiss representation.
A CD plate does not reveal the individual driver’s precise immunity. Accreditation, role and the applicable host-state arrangements remain decisive.
Common questions
Swiss diplomatic plate FAQs
What does CD mean on a Swiss number plate?
CD stands for corps diplomatique. In Switzerland, CD plates are used for qualifying service vehicles of diplomatic and permanent missions and international organisations, as well as eligible vehicles belonging to accredited diplomatic personnel and certain senior international officials.
How do I read a Swiss diplomatic plate?
Read the status block first, then the canton, the vehicle serial and the entity code after the separator. On CD GE 011 · 03, CD is the category, GE is Geneva, 011 is the serial and 03 identifies the represented entity—in this reference, the World Health Organization.
What is the difference between blue and green CD plates?
Blue CD plates are associated with permanent missions and international organisations in Geneva. Green CD plates are used for embassies in Bern.
What do CC and AT mean in Switzerland?
CC refers to consular registration. AT is for eligible administrative and technical staff of diplomatic missions in Bern. Geneva administrative and technical personnel generally use ordinary plates under current FDFA guidance.
Can a Swiss diplomatic motorbike have CD plates?
No. Current FDFA guidance states that motorcycles do not receive CD plates and must be registered with ordinary plates.
Does every international-organisation employee receive CD plates?
No. The Swiss Mission states that full diplomatic status and the relevant FDFA legitimation-card category are required for personal CD registration. Other employees register vehicles with ordinary plates.
Is the complete Swiss diplomatic code list official?
No convenient complete public code lookup is published by the Swiss authorities. This is an independent reference compiled from public and observed information. Official FDFA material is used for eligibility, colour and registration rules.
Why are some Swiss codes labelled open?
Five database entries remain deliberately marked as unidentified rather than being assigned to an entity without adequate verification. They stay visible so users can distinguish a known gap from a missing search result.
Sources and status
Registration, eligibility and colour explanations are based on current FDFA and Swiss Mission guidance. The entity-code lookup is an independent compilation because the Swiss authorities do not provide a convenient complete public reverse-lookup list. Of 289 displayed entries, 284 are verified in the maintained dataset and 5 remain explicitly unidentified.
