Working with NATO
Working at NATO’s International Staff means supporting the political and military alliance through which 32 Allies consult, take decisions by consensus and organise collective defence. The International Staff is a civilian body at NATO Headquarters in Brussels: it advises and supports national delegations, prepares policy work for the North Atlantic Council and helps carry decisions through committees. The work is consequential, but it is not a conventional national civil-service role or a humanitarian field-operation career.

Once you find a suitable NATO vacancy on IGO Jobs or the NATO careers page, submit your application through NATO's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.
Official NATO application route ↗1Confirm which NATO employer advertised the vacancy
Start with the NATO vacancies page or the corresponding IGO Jobs listing, then identify whether the job belongs to the International Staff at NATO Headquarters, a command, an agency or another NATO body. The Headquarters Recruitment Team handles International Staff roles in Brussels only; other NATO employers run their own processes.
2Check International Staff eligibility before applying
For a NATO Headquarters International Staff post, confirm that you are a national of a NATO member country, aged 21 to 64, and have completed national military service if required in your country. You also need very good English or French, plus every role-specific education, experience, nationality and clearance criterion.
3Apply to the live vacancy through the online platform
Create or update a candidate profile, then submit an application for the particular advertised post through NATO’s online recruitment platform. A general profile is not considered on its own. Complete the application in English or French and answer the pre-screening questions carefully; NATO does not accept spontaneous, emailed or mailed applications.
4Use the application form as your evidence record
Set out qualifications, training, competencies and professional experience in the form with direct reference to the vacancy’s requirements. Keep your profile accurate and current, because NATO screens the form and pre-screening answers before deciding whom to invite. Retain the acknowledgement of receipt after submitting before the deadline.
5Prepare for NATO’s invitation-only assessments
Shortlisted candidates may first record a video interview, then complete a written test and a one-hour computer-based language test. Depending on the post, NATO can also use a Microsoft Office Proficiency Test, practical test or an external assessment centre for some A.5-and-above positions before a panel interview.
6Complete post-selection formalities before resigning elsewhere
A favourable interview outcome is not yet an offer. NATO’s process still requires the appropriate security clearance, medical formalities and confirmation that the post is available and funded. The Recruitment Service then issues the official employment offer; security clearance can take several months or, in some cases, longer.
