Job Description

Analyses emerging science and technology trends and their military implications to inform NATO capability development and senior decision-making. The officer produces tailored assessments, reports and briefing material, collaborates with military commands, armaments and policy stakeholders, and supports the Chief Scientist's evidence-based advice on disruptive technologies, defence planning and the Alliance's technological advantage.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Identify and analyse science and technology trends for STO Tech Trends reports
  • Deliver reports on the military impact of emerging and disruptive technologies
  • Support capability-requirement setting through NATO defence planning and warfare-development work
  • Prepare reports and materials for senior military leadership and the Chief Scientist
  • Support armaments-community capability-development and delivery work
  • Draft papers, reports and speaking notes for NATO officials, committees and ministerials
  • Collaborate with and supervise analysis officers on relevant tasks
  • Support the Branch Head's liaison with the International Military Staff

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree or national military equivalent in a scientific, technical, engineering or mathematical discipline relevant to defence or security
  • At least 3 years of experience in defence and security policy or operational analysis
  • At least 3 years of experience in science or technology research or policy development
  • Broad operational knowledge of military technology and defence capabilities
  • Very good knowledge of English or French and good knowledge of the other official NATO language
  • Nationality of a NATO member country

Desired Criteria

  • Experience in operational research and analysis
  • Experience in an international and multinational environment
  • Knowledge of NATO policies, procedures and working methods
  • Practical management experience in planning, programming and budgeting
  • Postgraduate degree or military staff college
  • French language knowledge

  • Frequent international travel and irregular working hours are required
