Job Description

NATO seeks a Head of Headquarters Fire and Emergency Services in Brussels to lead professional responders for fire, medical, CBRN and other emergencies. The head will set fire-prevention and emergency-response policy, direct evacuation drills and team training, manage related budgets and equipment, coordinate with Belgian emergency services, and advise NATO Headquarters on operational, planning and technical fire-safety matters.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Lead professional responders for fire, medical, CBRN and other emergencies
  • Ensure NATO Headquarters emergency access and evacuation standards
  • Develop emergency evacuation drills and response exercises
  • Manage fire and emergency equipment, training and annual budgets
  • Coordinate with Belgian authorities and host-nation emergency services
  • Lead team training, mentoring and performance management

Role Requirements

  • University degree or equivalent qualification relevant to the position
  • At least five years managing a team of professional firefighters
  • Crisis-management degree or recognised advanced certificate in firefighting, incident management or emergency response
  • Extensive professional firefighting, emergency-management, emergency-planning and disaster-recovery experience
  • Advanced proficiency in one NATO official language and intermediate proficiency in the other

Desired Criteria

  • Experience developing fire-prevention, first-aid and emergency-response training programmes
  • Knowledge of CBRN incident-response procedures and rescue techniques
  • Knowledge of occupational health, safety and construction-safety regulations
