Responsibilities

  • Support legal aspects of International Military Staff work for the Military Committee and IMS divisions
  • Research legal issues in customary international law, law of armed conflict and institutional law
  • Review operational plans, rules of engagement and use of force in NATO missions
  • Support drafting of NATO policies with legal implications
  • Prepare legal briefs and background papers on operational, international and administrative law
  • Interpret and analyse international agreements, directives and regulations
  • Represent IMS Legal Advisor interests in Military Committee Working Groups when required
  • Support legal coordination across the NATO enterprise and representation before the NATO Administrative Tribunal

Requirements

  • Nationals of NATO member states only
  • At least four years of working experience as an assistant legal advisor for an international organisation or international law firm
  • In-depth understanding of international law and the law of armed conflict
  • Master-level university degree in law with specialisation in public international law or related discipline
  • Advanced spoken and written English
  • NATO SECRET clearance or eligibility for that clearance

Additional info

  • Competition is expected to be conducted on site at NATO HQ and completed by the fourth quarter of 2026
  • Post may require temporary duty travel, irregular hours and overtime
  • Successful applicant will be offered a three-year definite duration contract that may be renewed
  • Appointment is subject to security clearance and medical-file approval
  • Technical written assessment will be part of the selection procedure
