About Netherlands
The Netherlands is a compact European country of historic cities, waterways and contemporary urban design. The Hague combines seaside districts, parks, public buildings and residential neighbourhoods; Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Maastricht have distinct urban identities.
Daily life relies on cycling, trams, buses and rail. The Hague has over 30 tram and bus lines, and many routines need no car. Housing is costly and scarce, so a realistic budget, commute and neighbourhood choice matter. Parks, beaches, museums and local services make compact urban life appealing.
The Netherlands’ international-organization dimension centres on The Hague. The International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, OPCW, Eurojust and other bodies make it a hub for peace, justice, security and accountability. Maastricht adds UNU-MERIT’s research role, connecting the country to international law, migration, innovation and multilateral governance.

Working in Netherlands
The Hague is the Netherlands’ IGO hub and a specialist peace-and-justice market. The ICJ, ICC, OPCW, Eurojust, Europol and the Permanent Court of Arbitration create careers in international law, investigations, verification, policy, data, administration and operations. UN agencies and other bodies elsewhere in the country broaden the market, including UNHCR, IOM, UNDP and UNU-MERIT in Maastricht. International, local, contractor, consultancy and internship terms differ sharply. Check the legal employer, recruitment pool, languages, tax, residence and relocation before comparing offers.
Why Netherlands
Exceptional international-law ecosystem
The Hague concentrates courts, tribunals, justice bodies and specialised legal careers.
Unique verification and inspection roles
OPCW creates global work in chemical security, inspections, science and technical policy.
Dense multilateral professional network
Numerous institutions enable specialised collaboration across diplomacy, security, law and operations.
How to apply for UN jobs in Netherlands
Use IGOJobs to compare vacancies, then apply only through the official portal of the named employer. There is no shared Hague application account: OPCW, ICC, ICJ, Europol, Eurojust, the Secretariat, NGOs and other institutions have separate systems, documents and eligibility rules.
1Identify the institution and recruitment category
Determine whether the post is internationally recruited, locally recruited, General Service, contractor, consultancy or internship. OPCW, for example, identifies local General Service opportunities separately from international Professional positions. The category affects nationality eligibility, salary, tax, benefits and immigration support.
2Use the institution's official application system
Complete the profile in the platform named by the vacancy and submit all requested documents before closing. OPCW maintains its own career site and talent pool; other Hague employers operate different systems. Do not assume an existing UN or EU account transfers to another employer.
3Match expertise and language evidence precisely
Tailor proof of legal, inspection, scientific, investigative, security, policy, ICT, procurement, administrative or programme experience to the notice. English is prominent in international organizations; French, Dutch or other official languages can be required or advantageous depending on institution and post. State working proficiency accurately.
4Distinguish ordinary permits from host-nation status
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens may work under free movement. Other ordinary employees normally need the applicable Dutch employment permit or combined residence-and-work permit. Eligible staff at international organizations can receive a Dutch MFA diplomatic or organization identity card through the Protocol Department; that route depends on organization, function and residence status. Family members may be permitted to work only as indicated on their own card.
5Verify the offer and relocation package
Expect technical screening, written tasks, competency interviews, security or background checks, references and, for inspection or justice roles, additional suitability requirements. Before moving, confirm employer, duration, salary and tax basis, insurance, pension, relocation, identity-card or permit process, security clearance, housing and dependent provisions. OPCW states that international recruits can receive a relocation package, but entitlement is appointment-specific.
Dutch work permits and host-country status
Dutch, EU/EEA and Swiss citizens can work without a Dutch permit. Ordinary non-EEA employment uses an employment permit (TWV) or combined residence-and-work permit (GVVA), according to the work and duration. That route is separate from host-country arrangements for eligible international-organization staff. The Foreign Ministry’s Protocol and Host Country Affairs Department registers employees. Status depends on employer, function and seat agreement; an address alone does not establish it.

Netherlands International Careers FAQs
Is The Hague the main IGO duty station in the Netherlands?
Yes. The Hague is the centre for international justice, law, chemical-weapons verification, security and related organisations. Amsterdam and Rotterdam may offer wider international-sector opportunities, but The Hague hosts the core IGO employer cluster. Check the institution and exact work location in every vacancy.
Do all Hague organizations use one application portal?
No. OPCW, ICJ, ICC, Europol, Eurojust, tribunals, UN bodies, NGOs and other employers have distinct systems. An OPCW talent-pool profile or UN Careers account will not normally transfer. Apply through the original platform named in each official vacancy.
Does working for an IGO automatically make my salary tax-free?
No. Terms depend on the organization, appointment and host agreement. OPCW says staff salaries and benefits are normally exempt from Dutch national income tax, but this must not be assumed for contractors, local hires, consultants or any other employer. Confirm your written offer and HR guidance.
Do I need a Dutch work permit?
EU/EEA/Swiss nationals do not need one. Other ordinary hires may need a TWV or GVVA. Eligible staff at recognised international organizations can instead receive Dutch MFA identity-card status, but eligibility is function-specific. Check the employer-managed route before entering or starting work.
Can an accompanying family member work in the Netherlands?
Possibly, but not automatically. Dutch MFA identity-card guidance states that a family member's card indicates whether employment is allowed, sometimes on a restricted basis. Ordinary immigration routes have different rules. Confirm the individual's status rather than relying on the principal employee's appointment.
Can I apply without prior IGO experience?
Yes where the notice does not require it. The Hague market values strong demonstrable experience in law, science, inspection, investigations, policy, security, data, ICT, administration and operations. Translate external experience into the vacancy's technical criteria, international environment and competency framework.
