About Italy

Italy is a Mediterranean European country with regional identities, historic cities and a food culture. Rome is a layered urban setting where ancient neighbourhoods, modern institutions and diplomacy converge. The historic core is walkable, while the city’s wider scale makes location and daily routes important to how it feels.

Daily life is strongly neighbourhood-based. The municipal network links metro, rail, buses and trams, but cross-city journeys need time and flexibility. Central areas put culture, services and public spaces close by, whereas visitor-heavy streets can be crowded. Day-to-day ease depends on proximity to transport, shops and the places that structure a household’s routine.

Italy’s IGO profile is centred on Rome, the UN food-and-agriculture hub. FAO has been based there since 1951; IFAD and WFP are also in the city. Their presence anchors a multilateral dimension focused on food security, rural development, nutrition, climate resilience and emergency food assistance.

Working in Italy

Italy’s employment market centres on Rome’s food-and-agriculture hub, where FAO, WFP and IFAD are separate employers with different systems and terms. Brindisi adds UN Global Service Centre roles in supply chain, digital technology and operational support; Turin hosts the UN System Staff College’s learning and leadership work. Internationally recruited, locally recruited, consultancy, internship and Italian-law roles can have different eligibility, tax, social-security, residence and relocation arrangements. Check the legal employer, category and duty station before comparing offers.

Why Italy

  • Global food-security headquarters

Rome unites three major UN institutions focused on hunger, agriculture and rural development.

  • Humanitarian logistics capability

Brindisi supports global emergency logistics, information technology and operational service delivery.

  • UN learning expertise

Turin’s staff college creates specialist opportunities in learning, leadership and institutional development.

How to apply for UN jobs in Italy

Use IGOJobs.com to compare Italian vacancies, then complete the application on the hiring organisation’s own website. FAO, WFP, IFAD, UNICC/UN service entities, UNSSC and partner organisations do not share a candidate profile. Start by identifying whether the role is in Rome, Brindisi, Turin or another location and whether it is international, national, consultancy or internship recruitment.

1Open the named employer’s notice

Follow the official application link and save the full vacancy. Confirm the actual legal employer, deadline, grade or level, work modality and location before spending time on the application.

2Build the correct organisation profile

Create and complete the profile required by FAO, WFP, IFAD or the relevant employer. Supply the exact documents and declarations requested; information stored on one portal is not automatically visible to another.

3Match sector and language evidence

Explain how your experience addresses the food systems, humanitarian, rural-development, logistics or corporate-service requirements. English is widely used; Italian can be valuable for host-country interaction, while French, Spanish or Arabic may matter for global portfolios.

4Confirm contract and residence conditions

Check whether the post is internationally recruited, locally recruited, consultancy, temporary or internship. Non-EU applicants to ordinary Italian employment may need employer-supported authorisation; recognised institutional appointments can use a different host-state process.

5Prepare for selection and moving

Expect written assessments, technical interviews or competency panels. Before relocation, obtain written confirmation of salary currency, insurance, pension, tax treatment, visa or identity-card steps, family arrangements and any travel or shipment support.

Mission visa and institutional identity status

A qualifying appointment at a recognised international organisation may have Italian protocol, visa or identity documents. This differs from Italian employment, where non-EU hires normally follow national work-and-residence rules. Status depends on the legal employer, staff category, nationality and duration. Locally recruited staff, consultants, interns and other non-covered roles should not assume institutional documentation; confirm the route, dependants and timing with HR before travel.

Italy International Careers FAQs

Do I need Italian nationality to work for FAO, WFP or IFAD?

No for many internationally recruited roles. Professional vacancies are advertised according to each organisation’s eligibility rules, whereas local-support and national-contract posts may target candidates already entitled to work in Italy. The classification and wording of the individual notice determine eligibility, not the city alone.

Which portal should I use for Rome vacancies?

Use the official portal of the hiring organisation. FAO, WFP and IFAD maintain separate recruitment platforms, and a submitted profile cannot be reused automatically across them. Use IGOJobs to discover and compare opportunities, then finish only in the employer’s stated system.

Is Italian required?

Not universally. English is common in headquarters work, and other official languages may be required for a global portfolio. Italian can matter for roles with local authorities, suppliers or national partners. Treat the advertised required and desirable languages as the controlling standard.

Will an international appointment give me an Italian work permit?

An eligible appointment can use a specific institutional or mission-visa process, arranged through the employer. It is not interchangeable with ordinary Italian employment authorisation. Ask HR which route applies to the legal employer, contract category and your family’s circumstances before relocating.

Are all Italian international jobs in Rome?

No. Rome dominates the food and agriculture headquarters market, but Brindisi has UN operational and logistics support activity and Turin hosts the UN System Staff College. Confirm the advertised duty station, travel expectations and work modality because conditions differ materially.

Can private-sector experience be relevant?

Yes, if it demonstrates the notice’s required results and competencies. Supply chain, agriculture, data, finance, procurement, technology and programme experience can be transferable. Show scope, measurable results and stakeholder context rather than only naming employers or projects.
