Candidates who pass eligibility review may receive a pre-recorded video interview with time-bound questions and/or an online written assessment. The written assessment can include essays, case studies, numerical analysis or a presentation; UNESCO tells candidates in advance when an assessment is eliminatory.

Shortlisted candidates are invited to a panel interview, typically about 45 minutes. Reference and background checks follow for finalists before appointment and onboarding. UNESCO says a standard fixed-term recruitment process may take four to six months, depending on level and circumstances.
