1Confirm location, employer and appointment type
Read whether the role is Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, provincial, remote or travel-intensive, and identify whether it is international, National Officer, General Service, national consultancy, international consultancy, internship or NGO employment. The category determines eligibility and immigration support.
2Complete the specific employer application
Open the original vacancy and submit the required account, profile, CV, proposal and attachments by its deadline. UNICEF, UNFPA and agencies manage their own systems; a profile in one does not transfer to another. Do not email an application unless the official notice expressly instructs you to do so.
3Match Vietnamese, English and portfolio evidence
State Vietnamese and English proficiency exactly as required. Use concrete outcomes in climate, disaster response, health, nutrition, WASH, education, social protection, gender, migration, child rights, data, communications or operations. For national consultant roles, show country and institutional knowledge rather than assuming global experience alone is sufficient.
4Clarify ordinary permits and any exemption route
Vietnam's ordinary foreign-work process requires the employer to apply for a work permit with the relevant labour authority before the worker starts. Work-permit exemptions may apply where a treaty or international agreement provides one, with specified supporting documentation. A representative office of an international organization recruiting foreign staff must follow the applicable residence-purpose procedures. Only HR and the competent authorities can confirm the route for your appointment.
5Verify the offer before relocation
Expect written assessments, technical exercises, competency interviews and references. Before accepting, confirm legal employer, duration, salary, tax, insurance, medical requirements, duty station, travel, permit or exemption support, relocation and family eligibility. Do not start work on a visitor or business status.
Work permits, treaty exemptions and organization-specific residence procedures
Ordinary foreign workers in Vietnam need an employer-sponsored work permit. Vietnam recognises work-permit exemptions for work under treaties or international agreements, subject to required confirmation. Foreign staff at IO representative offices may use MOFA or immigration residence procedures, including NG3 visas where applicable. The route depends on legal employer, role, agreement and nationality; local hires, consultants and interns should obtain HR confirmation before travel.

Can non-Vietnamese nationals apply for IGO jobs in Vietnam?
Yes for eligible international positions. National Officer, General Service, national consultant and local roles commonly require Vietnamese nationality, residence or local work eligibility. The job's recruitment-pool wording controls, not the employer's international identity.
Is Vietnamese required?
It depends on the role. Vietnamese is essential for many national, government-facing, community and consultancy posts. English is widely used in international country-office work. Some roles require both. Follow the stated language criteria and show professional evidence of the proficiency claimed.
Is Hanoi the only IGO duty station?
Hanoi is the main hub, but Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa and other provinces host projects and selected employer functions. A Hanoi role may also require provincial travel. Check the duty station, reporting line and field requirements in the individual notice.
Do foreign staff need a Vietnam work permit?
