Climate and El Nino Expert

FAO seeks a PSA Climate and El Nino Expert in Hanoi to assess 2026 El Niño drought risks in Viet Nam’s Central Highlands. The consultant will review seasonal forecasts and drought patterns, identify risk-prone provinces and sectors, integrate climate evidence into the drought assessment, support consultations and validation, and prepare recommendations for the final report.

• Review seasonal climate outlooks and forecasts for the anticipated 2026 El Niño event
• Analyse historical climate patterns and drought events in the Central Highlands
• Assess El Niño implications and elevated drought risks for provinces and sectors
• Integrate climate information into the overall drought assessment
• Review climate-informed drought preparedness and anticipatory-action practices
• Provide inputs to stakeholder consultations and the final assessment report

• Advanced degree in Meteorology, Climatology, Climate Science, Hydrometeorology, Environmental science or related discipline
• At least 10 years experience in climate analysis, forecasting, drought assessment or climate-change adaptation
• Working knowledge of English and Vietnamese
• Vietnamese nationality or valid Vietnamese work permit

• Drought forecasting and early-warning-system experience
• Experience with hydro-meteorological agencies or international organizations
• Familiarity with Central Highlands climate conditions and drought issues
