Job Description

FAO is recruiting a water-resources and drought-management expert for a rapid drought assessment in Viet Nam's Central Highlands. The role provides technical assurance, integrates climate and agricultural-water analysis, assesses drought risks and preparedness, and develops evidence-based recommendations and a final report to strengthen resilient water management and climate adaptation.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Oversee drafting of the rapid drought assessment and ensure timely delivery of outputs
  • Review drought assessments, technical guidance and policies relevant to the Central Highlands
  • Analyse historical agricultural drought conditions for high-value crops including coffee and pepper
  • Integrate climate outlooks, El Niño assessments and agricultural-water-demand analyses into the drought assessment
  • Evaluate implications for agricultural production, rural water supply and water-resources management
  • Prepare and finalise the assessment report incorporating stakeholder feedback

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in water-resources engineering, environmental engineering, water-resources and irrigation management, hydraulic or hydrologic engineering, or a related field
  • At least 15 years of relevant experience in water-resources management, hydrology and drought management including at least 10 years in the Central Highlands
  • Working knowledge of English and Vietnamese
  • National of Viet Nam or resident with a valid work permit

Desired Criteria

  • Modelling experience in drought, water resources or disaster-risk assessment
  • Experience working with FAO, UN agencies, development partners or international organisations
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical assessments and preparing high-quality technical reports
  • Experience acting as team leader in similar assignments
