Common ways candidates explore Yemen vacancies by duty station, opportunity type and employer.
About Yemen
Yemen combines highland cities, coastal trading centres and a rural population with rich history and regional diversity. Sana’a, Aden, Taiz, Al Hudaydah and Mukalla have distinct identities. Conflict has damaged infrastructure and made access to services uneven.
Relocation is employer-led and varies by duty station. Security, access, accommodation and basic services can change quickly. Staff typically use organisation-approved housing and transport, and family relocation may be restricted. Confirm medical evacuation, rest arrangements and field travel before departure.
Yemen’s international-organisation presence is highly consequential. UN agencies, funds and programmes work on food security, nutrition, health, protection, displacement, water, logistics, recovery and peace support. Sana’a remains an important base, while Aden and other locations are operationally significant. The market rewards experience in complex emergencies, coordination and principled delivery.

Working in Yemen
Yemen’s international employment market is a large humanitarian and recovery operation. Sana’a remains a major base, with work linked to Aden, Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Mukalla and field locations. WFP, UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, IOM, OCHA, UNOPS, FAO, UNDP and partners work on food security, nutrition, health, protection, water, logistics and basic services. Arabic is central for country-facing work; English is essential in international teams. International, national, consultancy and field appointments differ in security, benefits, residence, travel and relocation; confirm employer and category.
Why Yemen
Complex emergency coordination platform
Large-scale needs require high-level coordination across humanitarian, development, recovery and peace-support actors.
Food security at scale
Food, nutrition, livelihoods and supply-chain portfolios operate at exceptional operational scale.
Humanitarian recovery and peace linkage
Integrated portfolios connect immediate assistance, essential services, resilience, institutions and longer-term recovery.
How to apply for UN jobs in Yemen
Compare Yemen opportunities on IGOJobs.com, then apply through the organisation named in the official notice. Yemen’s UN and humanitarian market does not use one recruitment account: UN agencies, the UN Secretariat, IOM, international NGOs and contractors each manage their own career systems, eligibility rules, assessments and security clearances.
1Use the recruiting organisation’s official portal
Start with IGOJobs to compare the employer, duty station, contract and functional area, then open the original notice through Apply now. UN Secretariat roles use UN Careers; WFP, UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, IOM, UNOPS and other agencies use their own systems. Complete the application only in the named employer’s portal and save the vacancy wording for later assessment preparation.
2Read the duty station as an operating condition
Sana’a, Aden, Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Mukalla and field assignments can have sharply different access, security, travel and support arrangements. Check whether the post is country-office, humanitarian coordination, programme delivery, technical support, operations or a project role. Confirm the stated duty station and travel requirements; do not infer them from a broad “Yemen” label.
3Tailor emergency and language evidence
Demonstrate results in the advertised area, such as food security, nutrition, health, WASH, logistics, supply, protection, displacement, cash, programme management, data, partnerships, recovery or coordination. Arabic is essential for many national-facing positions; English is fundamental for international coordination. Map every required criterion to a clear example and follow the notice’s language requirements exactly.
4Verify category, eligibility and security conditions
Separate internationally recruited, National Officer, General Service, consultancy, internship, volunteer, contractor and locally recruited roles. National or local positions can require Yemeni nationality or existing local eligibility. Selection for an international post does not remove security requirements. The legal employer determines whether ordinary national authorisation or an organisation-managed arrangement applies; wait for its written instructions before travel.
5Prepare for assessment and controlled relocation
Expect screening, written exercises, technical interviews, reference checks and security processes. Before accepting, confirm the legal employer, duration, salary and insurance, medical evacuation, rest and recuperation terms where applicable, travel and movement rules, accommodation, dependent eligibility, relocation support and documentation sequence. Conditions can change, so use current employer briefings rather than informal advice.
Foreign-worker licensing and organisation arrangements
Yemen’s entry-and-residence rules require foreigners to hold residence authorisation. Its Labour Law requires non-Yemeni workers to hold a formal Ministry work licence and links foreign employment to residence and work approval. Staff under international agreements are exempt only within that agreement. An eligible UN or IGO appointment may use employer-led arrangements, but status depends on legal employer, location and contract. Obtain written HR and security clearance before travel.

Yemen International Careers FAQs
Do I need Yemeni nationality for an international-organisation job in Yemen?
Not for every role. Internationally recruited appointments can be open across nationalities, while National Officer, General Service, local consultancy and other locally recruited posts may require Yemeni nationality, existing residence or local eligibility. The legal employer and the vacancy category control. Read the official notice carefully; a Yemen duty station alone does not determine who is eligible.
Are Yemen international jobs always based in Sana’a?
No. Sana’a remains a major UN base, but organisations also work through Aden, Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Mukalla and other field locations. Some roles are based outside Yemen while supporting the country portfolio. The exact duty station, field-travel expectation, security level, accommodation and access arrangements appear in the employer’s notice or are confirmed during recruitment.
Is Arabic required for Yemen-based roles?
Arabic is central to work with authorities, communities, local partners and national documentation. English is essential for international coordination, donor reporting and many Professional posts. The balance varies by employer and role; use the vacancy’s required and desired language fields as decisive, and present your proficiency honestly rather than assuming professional English is enough.
Should I arrange a Yemeni work licence before applying?
No. Yemen’s Labour Law requires formal licensing for ordinary non-Yemeni employment, while foreign residents also need the applicable residence authorisation. A qualifying international-organisation appointment may follow an employer-managed arrangement under the relevant agreement. The organisation should confirm the legal route, security clearance, documentation and timing after selection; do not travel or start work on assumptions.
Can I relocate with family to Yemen?
It depends on the employer, duty station, security assessment, contract and current operational conditions. Family relocation may be restricted, and housing, travel, medical evacuation and education arrangements can differ greatly between locations. Ask HR for written, current guidance on dependant eligibility and support before accepting; do not rely on a generic country classification or an older colleague’s experience.
Can I apply without previous UN experience?
Yes, when the vacancy does not require it. A strong application maps your education, experience, technical skills, languages and measurable results to each stated criterion. Relevant humanitarian, public-sector, NGO, health, logistics, research or community experience can demonstrate fit. Prior UN service may help for some roles, but it never replaces the employer’s stated qualifications, assessment and security process.
