About Colombia

Colombia is a diverse South American country of mountains, coasts and major cities. Bogotá is a high-altitude metropolis of neighbourhoods, universities, public institutions and cultural life. Medellín, Cali, Cartagena and Barranquilla offer contrasting urban settings, while regional identities shape everyday experience.

Daily life in Bogotá turns on neighbourhood and travel time. TransMilenio, buses, cable cars, cycling and walking connect many routines, but traffic, weather and elevation shape a day. Parks, markets, cafés and cultural venues are plentiful; housing, security and convenience differ strongly between districts.

Colombia’s international-organization dimension combines development with peacebuilding. The UN Country Team works on health, migration, protection, climate, food systems, governance and human rights. The UN Verification Mission supports the 2016 Final Peace Agreement. Together they connect Colombia to conflict transformation, inclusion and humanitarian concerns.

Working in Colombia

Bogotá hosts major agency, donor and Verification Mission functions, while border, Pacific, rural and regional locations can carry different field, travel and security conditions. Colombia's IGO work spans peace implementation, migration, protection, humanitarian response, climate, health, food systems, child rights, gender, governance and monitoring. International, national, local, consultancy, volunteer and NGO contracts have different salary, authorization, insurance and relocation terms. Verify the location in the vacancy rather than assuming country-office conditions.

Why Colombia

  • Peace implementation expertise

The Verification Mission creates specialist opportunities in monitoring, analysis and mission support.

  • Migration and protection portfolios

Border and urban work connects displacement, integration, services and regional coordination.

  • Nationwide development delivery

Climate, rural development and governance programmes extend well beyond Bogotá.

How to apply for UN jobs in Colombia

Use IGOJobs to find the vacancy, then submit through the legal employer's official career portal. Colombia has no single UN application account; the Verification Mission, agencies, UN Volunteers, NGOs and contractors operate separate systems.

1Confirm employer, city and recruitment category

Read whether the role is based in Bogotá, Cúcuta, Quibdó or another location, and identify its contract category. For the Verification Mission, international P and Field Service posts use UN Careers; National Officer positions are only for Colombian candidates, and General Service roles require Colombian nationality or a valid Colombian work permit.

2Complete the correct portal profile

Create the requested profile and follow the original notice. UN Careers is used for Secretariat and Verification Mission roles; agencies and NGOs use their own systems. Tailor work history, education, language profile, technical examples and attachments. An account with one employer does not transfer to another.

3Show relevant Colombian and language capability

Spanish is essential for most national engagement, field and partner-facing roles. Tie achievements to the actual portfolio: peace implementation, migration, protection, child rights, health, food security, monitoring, rural development, climate, gender, finance or operations. State English and Spanish proficiency honestly and address regional or field experience where relevant.

4Clarify immigration status with the employer

Foreign nationals in ordinary work need the Colombian visa or authorization applicable to their contract. Colombia's visa guidance allows an IGO or other accredited public institution to support a work-visa request by letter; accredited IGO personnel may have a protocol-managed status. Neither route applies automatically to all consultants, local staff or family members, so HR must identify the correct process.

5Verify the appointment before relocation

Prepare for written assessments, technical panels, competency interviews and references. Before accepting, confirm the legal employer, duty station, travel and security arrangements, contract term, pay currency, tax, medical insurance, entry or visa support, relocation assistance and family eligibility. A job offer alone does not grant work authorization.

Ordinary work visas and protocol arrangements

Ordinary foreign work needs the Colombian visa or authorization matching the contract. An IGO, accredited diplomatic mission, consulate or state entity may provide the supporting visa letter. Accredited international-organization personnel may instead follow Foreign Ministry Protocol procedures. This is not automatic: function, accreditation, employer and contract determine the category. Consultants and local staff should not assume IGO status, residence or family arrangements.

Colombia International Careers FAQs

Can foreigners apply for IGO jobs in Colombia?

Yes for internationally recruited positions when eligible. The UN Verification Mission specifies that its National Officer roles are for Colombian candidates, and General Service applicants must be Colombian or hold valid Colombian work permission. Other employers set their own rules, so read the vacancy's eligibility clause.

Is Bogotá the only important IGO duty station?

No. Bogotá is the main coordination hub, but Cúcuta, Quibdó, Arauca, Pasto, Buenaventura and other locations support field programmes and peace, migration or humanitarian work. The practical conditions, travel and security requirements may be very different from a Bogotá-based post.

Is Spanish required?

Usually for national, field, government-engagement and partner-facing work. International roles may require both Spanish and English or specify a working-language standard. Do not infer eligibility from a global employer; follow the stated language requirement and describe proficiency accurately.

Does a UN offer automatically give me a Colombian work visa?

No. HR and the legal employer must confirm the appropriate Colombian visa, authorization or protocol process for your appointment. A supporting letter from an IGO can be relevant for a visa application, but the process, category and eligibility vary by function and contract.

Can I apply without experience in a peace operation?

Yes unless it is expressly required. Colombian employers also recruit expertise in programme management, protection, migration, health, agriculture, logistics, data, finance and operations. Translate non-UN experience into the technical responsibilities and competencies listed in the notice.

Do all IGO employers use UN Careers?

No. UN Careers covers Secretariat opportunities such as Verification Mission posts, while UNICEF, UNDP, IOM, UNHCR, WFP, UN Volunteers, NGOs and contractors use separate portals. Apply only through the system named in the original vacancy and never pay a recruitment fee.
