Job Description

The Special Assistant, Political Affairs advises the SRSG of UNVMC from Bogotá. The role analyses political developments and the peace process, prepares options and correspondence, maintains relationships with national and international actors, organises high-level engagements, coordinates transition work and actively supervises staff supporting the Mission mandate.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Advise the SRSG and Principal Political Affairs Officer on political developments, the Mission mandate and Colombian peace process
  • Bring matters requiring the SRSG’s attention forward and ensure directed follow-up
  • Draft correspondence, code cables and reports for the Security Council
  • Maintain working relationships with state institutions, political parties, civil society and religious actors
  • Organise conferences, meetings, seminars and workshops for the SRSG
  • Coordinate transition actions with bilateral donors and international organisations and supervise staff

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in Political Science, Management, Development or a related field
  • Minimum seven years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution or a related field
  • Extensive experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting
  • English and Spanish are required

Desired Criteria

  • Professional training in planning, facilitation or coordination
  • Experience in a special political or peacekeeping mission or related international organisation
  • Experience supporting a senior public official as a Special Assistant
