Working with ITU

Working at ITU means helping make a global digital system interoperable, accessible and sustainable. The Union’s mandate spans three closely connected areas: radiocommunication, telecommunications standardization and digital development. One team may help countries coordinate radio spectrum and satellite networks; another may convene technical experts to agree standards; another may support regulators, governments and communities to expand affordable, safe and meaningful connectivity.

Why Work at ITU?

  • Shape the world’s digital rules

Help develop standards, spectrum coordination and policy that keep global technologies interoperable.

  • Connect technology with inclusion

Advance affordable, meaningful connectivity for communities currently excluded from the digital economy.

  • Work across governments and industry

Build consensus among technical experts, regulators, companies and development partners worldwide.

How to Apply for ITU Jobs

Once you find a suitable ITU vacancy on IGO Jobs or the ITU careers page, submit your application through ITU's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.

Official ITU application route ↗
1Search ITU Careers by category, keyword or location

Open ITU Careers and browse Job Openings, select a category or use the search tool for a keyword or location. Read the whole vacancy before applying, including the contract category, grade, duty station, required education, experience, languages and technical or functional competencies.

2Create a new ITU Careers account

Select Apply now and register a Candidate Profile in ITU’s current platform. ITU says applicants from its pre-May 2022 system must create new credentials because older profile data was not migrated. You can view openings without an account, but an account is required to apply or create job alerts.

3Complete the mandatory Candidate Profile details

Enter complete, accurate information in every required profile section. ITU’s guidance says the profile can be used as a general template for future applications and will be updated with the latest submitted data. Include work achievements and competencies, not just job titles; a cover letter is optional but strongly recommended.

4Customize the application for the ITU sector and vacancy

Answer the Job-Specific Information section and show why your experience fits the advertised result. For example, link technical work to standards, spectrum, network policy, cybersecurity, digital inclusion, data or capacity development. Do not use one generic technology résumé for several vacancies; tailor the evidence to the named sector and function.

5Certify, submit and keep the acknowledgment

Review the profile and role-specific answers, read the statements of acknowledgment and certify them, then select Submit. A successful application displays a confirmation message and generates an automated email. Upload diplomas, training records or a passport only if requested later; ITU notes these are not required merely to create a profile or submit.

6Monitor the account and prepare for assessment

Use My Profile and Job Applied to view past applications, and set alerts through Options if helpful. ITU recruitment can include tests and interviews for competitive selections. Prepare concise examples that demonstrate the advertised technical knowledge, communication and international collaboration; contact the official recruitment-help address only for platform problems.

Recruitment safety: No legitimate ITU application requires a payment. Apply through ITU Careers, keep correspondence linked to the official vacancy and be cautious if anyone asks for money, banking details or documents outside the platform before a formal request. For genuine online-application technical issues, ITU publishes an official recruitment-help contact rather than using unofficial intermediaries.

Frequently asked questions about ITU careers

Where do I apply for ITU jobs?+

All current ITU vacancies are advertised through ITU Careers. You may browse openings without signing in, but you must create an account, complete a Candidate Profile and submit against a particular vacancy to apply. The platform also lets candidates view past applications and create job alerts. Use the official portal rather than sending an unsolicited CV by email.

Do I need an engineering background to work at ITU?+

Not for every role. ITU has technical careers in telecommunications, spectrum, standards, cybersecurity and digital development, but it also recruits professionals in policy, law, economics, partnerships, programme management, communications, finance, human resources and conference services. The individual vacancy defines the required background. Match your evidence to its sector, grade and technical or functional requirements.

Can I reuse my ITU candidate profile?+

Yes. ITU says that a general Candidate Profile can serve as a basic template for multiple applications and can be updated. However, each application must be made for a specific Job Opening and customized separately. Treat the profile as a foundation, then adapt the work history, cover letter and job-specific responses so they address the result and competencies named in that vacancy.

What documents must I upload for an ITU application?+

ITU says diplomas, additional education or training records and a passport are not required simply to complete the profile or submit an application, although they may be requested later in the recruitment process. A cover letter is optional but highly recommended. Follow the actual vacancy and the portal prompts, and ensure that every claim about education, experience and language can be supported if verified.

What happens after I submit an ITU application?+

After successful submission, the platform shows a confirmation and sends an automated email. ITU evaluates applications against the selected vacancy; competitive recruitment can include tests and interviews. You can check the record under My Profile and Job Applied. The eventual process and timing depend on the contract and role, so do not assume every vacancy has the same assessment sequence.

Does ITU charge an application fee?+

No legitimate ITU application requires a payment. Apply through ITU Careers, keep correspondence linked to the official vacancy and be cautious if anyone asks for money, banking details or documents outside the platform before a formal request. For genuine online-application technical issues, ITU publishes an official recruitment-help contact rather than using unofficial intermediaries.
