About Senegal

Senegal is a West African country where Atlantic coast, Sahelian landscapes and music shape public life. Dakar sits on a peninsula, mixing dense neighbourhoods, coastal roads, markets and business areas. Saint-Louis, Thiès and Ziguinchor have distinct local rhythms.

Daily life in Dakar revolves around neighbourhood and travel time. Buses, taxis and informal transport connect the city, but congestion, heat and seasonal rain slow journeys. Markets, cafés, beaches and public spaces support everyday social life. Housing and services vary by district, so a home near destinations makes routines easier.

Senegal’s international role combines development and regional diplomacy. The UN Country Team works on inclusive development, climate resilience, health, food systems, social protection, governance and human rights. Dakar also hosts UNOWAS, which supports preventive diplomacy and political mediation across West Africa and the Sahel. This connects Senegal to regional peace and security.

Working in Senegal

Dakar is a major West African UN hub, combining country delivery with regional functions in humanitarian coordination, labour, migration and technical cooperation. Employers include the regional OCHA office, ILO, IOM, UNHCR, WFP, WHO and UNOPS, recruiting across climate, food systems, health, protection, governance, data and partnerships. Field work can extend to Casamance, Kédougou and other regions. International, national, local, consultancy and NGO appointments can differ in pay, visa, security, travel and relocation. Check the employer, scope and duty station before comparing offers.

Why Senegal

  • Regional West Africa exposure

Dakar-based teams frequently support multi-country programmes, coordination and technical assistance.

  • Strong francophone partnership environment

French-language work connects UN teams with government, regional and community stakeholders.

  • Climate and inclusive-development portfolios

Roles cover resilience, food systems, health, governance and sustainable economic opportunity.

How to apply for UN jobs in Senegal

Use IGOJobs to identify Senegal vacancies, then apply in the official system of the legal employer. There is no shared UN account for Dakar: Secretariat, agencies, UN Volunteers, NGOs and contractors recruit separately.

1Confirm whether the role is national, country or regional

Read the duty station, reporting line and travel clause. A Dakar role may serve Senegal alone or a West and Central Africa portfolio. Establish whether it is international, National Officer, local, consultancy, internship, volunteer or partner employment before preparing documents.

2Use the original employer portal

Open the named employer's vacancy page and submit the requested account, CV, personal-history form, technical proposal or supporting documents by the stated deadline. The Secretariat uses UN Careers for applicable roles, while funds, agencies and NGOs have separate systems. One profile will not transfer across employers.

3Make French and portfolio evidence specific

State French, English and relevant local-language capability precisely. Link achievements to humanitarian coordination, climate, food systems, public health, nutrition, protection, migration, governance, human rights, data, partnerships, procurement or operations as required. For regional roles, demonstrate work across countries, institutions or complex stakeholder environments.

4Confirm work and residence arrangements with HR

For ordinary foreign employment, Senegal's Labour Code requires the employer to present the written employment contract for approval by the General Directorate of Labour and Social Security when the work requires installation away from the worker's usual residence. Eligible IGO officials may instead have convention- or host-arrangement status. This distinction is contract-specific and does not automatically cover consultants, local staff or dependants.

5Complete selection and offer checks

Expect written tasks, competency interviews, technical panels and reference checks. Before relocating, confirm employer, duration, compensation, tax, insurance, duty station, regional travel, security arrangements, visa or residence process, relocation support and family eligibility. Never pay a recruitment fee.

Employer-led contract approval and IGO status

Senegal’s Labour Code requires contracts involving installation away from a worker’s usual residence to be submitted by the employer for a labour-authority visa. Eligible IGO officials may have privileges and immigration arrangements under conventions or host agreements. This depends on recognised organisation and appointment, not the worksite alone. Consultants, local hires and family members should not assume official status; confirm employer, documentation and timing with HR before travel.

Senegal International Careers FAQs

Can non-Senegalese nationals apply for IGO jobs in Senegal?

Yes for internationally recruited roles where eligible. National Officer, General Service, national staff and many local consultancy positions can require Senegalese nationality, local residence or work eligibility. Read the eligibility clause and contract category rather than assuming Dakar roles are open internationally.

Is French required for IGO work in Senegal?

French is fundamental for most government, country-programme and francophone regional work. English may be required in regional, global or technical roles, and local languages can matter for field delivery. Follow the vacancy's stated language requirements and give accurate proficiency evidence.

Are most international jobs in Dakar?

Dakar is the major country and regional hub, but roles can include travel to Ziguinchor, Kédougou and other locations, or cover multiple West and Central African countries. Confirm the physical duty station, travel percentage and operational scope before deciding whether a role fits.

Do foreign staff need Senegalese work authorization?

Ordinary foreign employment follows Senegal's labour and immigration procedures, including employer-led contract approval where applicable. Eligible IGO officials may use a separate host-agreement or convention-based route. Neither an offer nor an international title automatically determines status; ask HR before travel.

Can I apply without prior UN experience?

Yes when the notice does not require it. Senegal employers value results from government, NGOs, research, private sector, humanitarian work and regional programmes. Map achievements in the requested technical field to the vacancy's competencies, stakeholders and delivery environment.

Do employers use one Senegal recruitment portal?

No. UN Careers covers applicable Secretariat positions, while UNICEF, UNDP, WFP, IOM, WHO, UNODC, UN Women, NGOs and contractors use separate platforms. Use IGOJobs to compare roles, then apply only in the original system named by the employer.
