About Egypt

Egypt is a North African country where the Greater Cairo area along the Nile shapes urban life. Historic quarters, dense districts, new developments and public institutions form a city of scale and contrast. Location strongly affects the rhythm of daily life.

Practical routines benefit from local planning. Cairo has buses, rail, taxis, ride-hailing services and a metro linking districts, but traffic and distance make travel time important. Food, shops, schools and services are widely available. Flexibility and proximity help residents balance the city’s energy with its size and heat.

Egypt has an international-organization presence. Twenty-eight UN entities work in the country, while Cairo hosts FAO’s Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa and UNDRR’s Regional Office for Arab States. These roles connect Egypt to regional work on food systems, climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, humanitarian action, health, migration, industry and sustainable development.

Working in Egypt

Egypt’s IGO employment market combines Greater Cairo country offices with regional hubs serving North Africa, the Arab region and the Middle East. It brings together FAO, ILO, ICAO, IFAD, UNESCO and UNDRR with UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, WFP, IOM and UNHCR, across food systems, labour, aviation, humanitarian response, public health and development. International appointments, local contracts, consultancies, UN Volunteers and NGO roles can differ in eligibility, pay, tax, residence and relocation. Check the legal employer, duty station and contract category before comparing offers.

Why Egypt

  • Regional gateways around Cairo

Multiple regional offices connect Egypt-based specialists with Arab and African priorities.

  • Broad technical institution mix

Food, labour, aviation, development, health and protection employers create varied career tracks.

  • National and regional portfolios

Country delivery and multi-country policy work can coexist within the same city.

How to apply for UN jobs in Egypt

Compare Egypt vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then apply in the official system named in the notice. Greater Cairo hosts country, regional and hub offices, so a Cairo search can lead to Secretariat, agency, financial-institution or NGO roles with separate eligibility and contract systems.

1Find the correct official portal

Use IGOJobs to compare roles, then open the employer’s notice. Secretariat vacancies use UN Careers and Inspira. FAO, ILO, ICAO, IFAD, UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, WFP, IOM, UNHCR, UN Women, UNOPS, banks and NGOs use their own systems.

2Build the required profile

Create an Inspira account for Secretariat vacancies and complete mandatory fields. Other employers can require a separate profile, personal history form, CV, motivation statement, references or supporting documents. Match every education, experience, language, technical and competency requirement to verifiable evidence.

3Tailor Arabic and regional evidence

Arabic is important for many Egypt-focused roles involving public institutions, communities and national partners. English is widely used; French can be valuable regionally. Use concise examples showing the challenge, role, stakeholders, action and measurable result, particularly for multi-country functions.

4Check appointment and authorization conditions

Identify whether the role is internationally recruited, National Officer, General Service, local consultancy, UN Volunteer, internship or national contract. Ordinary foreign employment requires a Ministry of Labour work permit and residence formalities; eligible officials of covered organizations can follow employer-led arrangements.

5Prepare for assessment and relocation

Expect written exercises, technical tests, competency interviews, presentations, references or language assessment. Before moving, confirm the legal employer, duration, salary, tax, insurance, pension, family eligibility, worksite and residence documentation. An offer alone does not establish work permission.

Egyptian work permits and institutional status

Ordinary Egyptian employment requires a Ministry of Labour work permit and residence formalities; visitor status does not permit work. Eligible officials may receive employer-led entry and residence arrangements under an agreement. Coverage depends on organisation, staff category, nationality, contract and assignment. Local hires, consultants and other non-covered appointments should not assume institutional status; confirm the route, dependants and timing with HR before travel.

Egypt International Careers FAQs

Do I need Egyptian nationality for an international role?

Not for every role. International Professional posts can be open to applicants of different nationalities, while National Officer, General Service, local consultancy and country-programme roles may require Egyptian nationality, residence or local work eligibility. The vacancy is the controlling source.

Is Arabic required for Egypt jobs?

Arabic is essential for many roles involving government, communities, national partners or Arabic documents. English is widely used by international employers, and French can add value in regional work. Follow the stated language level; an English-language portal does not remove Arabic requirements.

Do staff need an Egyptian work permit?

Not necessarily. Ordinary foreign employment requires a Ministry of Labour work permit and residence formalities. Eligible officials of covered organizations may use employer-led arrangements under the applicable agreement. A Cairo office address does not itself create status; HR must confirm the route.

Are all positions in central Cairo?

No. Cairo is the main duty station, but offices can be in Giza, Maadi, 6th of October City or Alexandria. Confirm the precise worksite, commuting, travel, security and relocation terms in the written offer before making arrangements.

Can I apply without prior UN experience?

Yes, if it is not required. Map the advertised education, years of experience, languages, technical expertise and competencies to specific results from government, civil society, research, private-sector or regional work. Previous UN service is useful only when relevant to the stated criteria.

Which recruitment portal should I use?

There is no Egypt-wide UN recruitment account. Secretariat entities use UN Careers and Inspira, while agencies, funds, banks and NGOs use separate career portals. Complete the system named in the official vacancy before the deadline and never rely on a generic email address.
