About Brazil
Brazil is a diverse South American country whose cities have different rhythms. Brasília is a planned modernist city of broad axes, residential superblocks, green space and institutional districts. Its spacious layout contrasts sharply with the denser life of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Recife.
In Brasília, convenience depends on the relationship between home and regular destinations. Parks, cycleways, buses and metro connections support daily life, but broad distances make route planning important. Services cluster around residential and commercial areas, so neighbourhood choice strongly affects routine and quality of life.
Brazil’s international-organization dimension is a large UN country presence across development, climate, health, food systems, human rights and urban issues. Brasília adds a South-South policy role through the UNDP-hosted International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth, which supports countries to design and assess inclusive social policies.

Working in Brazil
Brazil’s IGO market is centred on Brasília, with functions in Rio de Janeiro, Manaus and projects nationwide. The UN Country Team covers food systems, health, gender, human rights, climate, disaster risk reduction and governance. WFP’s Centre of Excellence and the World Bank add policy and partnership work. Internationally and locally recruited staff, consultants, UN Volunteers and NGO employees can have distinct contracts, pay, social protection, migration support and relocation benefits. Confirm the employer, duty station and appointment category before comparing offers.
Why Brazil
Amazon and climate leadership
Environmental, Indigenous and climate portfolios connect national policy with globally significant ecosystems.
Brasília’s federal partnership hub
Federal institutions and UN country offices concentrate policy, programme and coordination careers.
Continental-scale field opportunity
Amazon, border and state-level operations create practical roles beyond the capital.
How to apply for UN jobs in Brazil
Use IGOJobs to compare Brazil opportunities, then apply through each employer’s official career system. A Brasília country-office role, Amazon field post and regional or international assignment can carry different eligibility and relocation conditions.
1Find the correct employer portal
The UN Brazil jobs page can surface openings, but it is not one shared account. UNDP, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNOPS, FAO, WFP, UNESCO, the World Bank and other employers maintain separate career systems. Check whether the notice is national, international, consultancy, volunteer, internship or project work.
2Build the required application profile
Create the account requested by the legal employer and complete all mandatory fields. A UN Secretariat vacancy differs from an agency, bank or NGO application. Record each education, experience, competency, duty-station and deadline requirement, then address it with evidence.
3Tailor Portuguese and technical evidence
Portuguese is important for public-sector partnerships, national programmes and field delivery. English is common in international teams; Spanish, French and relevant Indigenous-language experience can add value where stated. Show measurable results in policy, social protection, humanitarian response, climate, health, monitoring, procurement or partnerships.
4Check appointment and immigration conditions
National Officer, General Service and many project roles can require Brazilian nationality, residence or existing work rights. Ordinary overseas employment follows Brazil’s labour-residence route and CRNM registration. Eligible officials on official mission may use VIDIP or VISOF visas; do not assume a visitor status or offer letter authorizes employment.
5Prepare for assessment and offer checks
Prepare for tests, technical exercises, interviews, presentations and references matching the notice. Before moving, confirm employer, duration, salary currency, insurance, tax, pension, travel, duty station, security and whether HR will arrange labour-residence documentation, CRNM registration or official-mission formalities.
Brazilian residence and official-mission visas
Ordinary overseas hires need Brazil’s labour-residence authorization, followed by registration and a CRNM; visitor status does not authorize employment. Eligible officials of recognized international organizations on mission may receive a Diplomatic Visa (VIDIP) or Official Visa (VISOF), depending on status and an organizational diplomatic note. For missions over 90 days, MRE registration is required. HR should confirm the route because it depends on employer, function and assignment.

Brazil International Careers FAQs
Do I need Brazilian nationality for an international organization job?
Not for every post. Internationally recruited positions may be open under the vacancy’s nationality rules. National Officer, General Service and project posts are locally recruited and can require Brazilian nationality, residence or work authorization. A Brazil role does not automatically carry international-recruitment benefits.
Is Portuguese required?
Often, especially for national programme delivery, public-sector engagement and fieldwork. English is widely used in international teams, while Portuguese may be mandatory or an asset. Some roles value Spanish, French or Indigenous-language skills. Follow the vacancy’s language fields and state proficiency honestly.
Will an international role give me a Brazilian work visa?
Not necessarily. Ordinary employment follows labour-residence rules and CRNM registration. Eligible officials on mission may use VIDIP or VISOF visas. Employer and appointment determine the route; a visitor status is not permission to work.
Are most jobs in Brasília?
No. Brasília is the policy and coordination hub, but Rio hosts UNIC Brasil and WIPO, and programmes operate nationwide, including the Amazon. Confirm the assigned city, work modality, travel and relocation conditions from the vacancy rather than assuming a capital-based role.
Can I apply without previous UN experience?
Yes, where it is not required. Government, civil-society, academic, private-sector and regional experience can be competitive when it proves the stated technical duties, stakeholders, languages and results. Map each essential criterion to evidence rather than relying on a general interest in international work.
Do all organizations use the same Brazil system?
No. The UN Brazil jobs page helps find openings, but each employer controls its own career site, forms and deadlines. Use IGOJobs to compare vacancies, then submit through the official system named in the notice. A profile in one system rarely transfers to another.
