Working with World Bank

Working at the World Bank Group means helping public and private-sector clients turn development priorities into investments, reforms and measurable results. It is not a single operating agency: IBRD and IDA finance and advise governments; IFC works with the private sector; MIGA provides political-risk insurance and guarantees; and ICSID administers investor–state dispute settlement. A role is usually anchored in one institution or unit, but the “One World Bank Group” model expects staff to combine these tools around country goals.

Why Work at World Bank?

  • Five institutions, one toolkit

Connect public finance, private investment, guarantees and dispute settlement in development solutions.

  • Work closer to clients

Help shape country operations while more staff move into the regions served.

  • Turn evidence into decisions

Apply data, economics and sector expertise to investments, reforms and policy choices.

How to Apply for World Bank Jobs

Once you find a suitable World Bank Group vacancy on IGO Jobs or the World Bank Group careers page, submit your application through the official recruitment system. Below is a guide on how to apply.

Official World Bank application route ↗
1Identify the right World Bank Group route

Search Current Openings by location, keyword and job family, then read whether the role is operational or corporate, locally or internationally recruited, and staff, consultant or temporary. Check the exact education, experience, nationality, mobility and work-authorisation requirements before starting.

2Create a profile in the official careers platform

Use **Sign In / Create Profile** on the World Bank Group Careers site. All vacancy applications must be completed through the online system; the Group does not accept applications by email or post. You can also set alerts for a sector, function or location when no suitable opening is live.

3Tailor the CV and Statement of Interest

Prepare a focused CV and a Statement of Interest that directly explains your motivation, the team or role you seek, and the achievements that show you meet the criteria. The Group advises keeping the Statement of Interest under one page; selection committees use it to understand your experience and distinctive fit.

4Complete screening questions accurately

Enter your application information and answer every screening question truthfully. The World Bank Group uses these answers during longlisting and states that false responses result in rejection. Use the vacancy wording to check experience dates, qualifications, nationality and any location-specific eligibility before you submit.

5Submit before the stated UTC deadline

Review your uploaded documents, profile, answers and contact details, then submit before 11:59 PM UTC on the closing date. You receive an acknowledgement after submission. Afterwards, the system permits contact-information updates only; withdrawing the application means you cannot reapply to that same requisition.

6Prepare for the World Bank Group selection stages

Initial screening creates a longlist, after which a Selection Advisory Committee recommends three to five candidates for interview. Expect an on-demand video or panel interview and, where relevant, a test, case study or presentation. References, appointment paperwork and a Letter of Appointment follow the final selection.

Frequently asked questions about World Bank careers

Where do I apply for World Bank Group jobs?+

Apply through the World Bank Group Careers site, which opens the job platform used for Current Openings in Washington, DC, country and regional offices. Applications sent by email or mail are not accepted. If no vacancy fits, create a profile and set alerts for your field or preferred location.

What kinds of World Bank Group contracts are available?+

The Group recruits administrative, professional and managerial staff, as well as consultants and temporary personnel. The vacancy specifies the grade, duty station and appointment. Extended Term Consultant and Extended Term Temporary roles normally have a 90-day minimum and a three-year cumulative lifetime cap.

Must I be a national of a World Bank Group member country?+

Generally yes: the World Bank Group says applicants must be nationals of a member country. That is only one eligibility point. Country-office roles may be locally recruited, and GA–GD or ETT appointments give preference to eligible nationals, residents or people independently authorized to work locally.

What happens after I submit a World Bank Group application?+

The World Bank Group describes a structured process normally completed in 60–90 days. Screening questions help create a longlist; a Selection Advisory Committee recommends three to five candidates to interview. An on-demand video, panel interview, test, case study or presentation can be added for the role.

Does the World Bank Group offer remote or flexible work?+

Not automatically. The Group encourages staff to work one day a week from home and offers arrangements such as telecommuting, reduced schedules and flextime, but these are subject to the manager’s discretion and business needs. Treat the listed duty station and work arrangement as controlling.
