About Nepal
Nepal is a Himalayan country whose administrative, cultural and international activity centres on Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur form an interconnected urban area of historic districts and changing suburbs. Heritage and mountain views create a striking setting, but daily life is metropolitan.
Routines require planning around traffic, road dust and air quality. Official reports identify vehicle emissions, dust, burning and industrial sources as Valley pressures. A location near regular destinations can matter more than apparent distance; consider indoor air precautions, service access and a realistic commute.
Nepal’s international profile combines country programmes with regional mountain policy. The UN Country Team works across sustainable development, preparedness and resilience. ICIMOD, an intergovernmental centre based in Lalitpur, serves eight Hindu Kush Himalaya countries and anchors the Valley in work on climate, water, ecosystems and regional cooperation.

Working in Nepal
Kathmandu is Nepal's main UN and IGO duty station, while Janakpur, Nepalgunj, Butwal and other provincial locations support field delivery and travel. Employers recruit disaster-risk, climate, health, WASH, social policy, gender, child rights, food systems, infrastructure, operations, data and programme specialists. International, national, local, consultancy, internship and volunteer categories have different eligibility, pay, insurance, visa, relocation and mobility terms. Review the specific vacancy before comparing a Kathmandu assignment with a provincial post.

Federal and provincial delivery experience
Roles develop practical skills in government coordination across diverse geographic settings.
How to apply for UN jobs in Nepal
Use IGOJobs to find relevant Nepal roles, then apply only through the legal employer's official platform. The UN country site, UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, Secretariat, UN Volunteers and NGOs use distinct systems and appointment structures.
1Identify nationality and duty-station eligibility first
Check if the role is National Officer, General Service, national consultancy, international consultancy or international appointment. Current UNICEF Nepal vacancies explicitly reserve some Kathmandu and Janakpur posts for Nepalese nationals. Confirm whether the job is Kathmandu-based or requires provincial field presence and travel.
2Apply through the correct employer portal
Open the original vacancy, create the requested account and submit the listed profile, CV, personal-history information, proposal or documents before the deadline. UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA and the Secretariat maintain separate systems. An application account for one organization does not transfer to another.
3Tailor evidence to Nepal's programme environment
Match outcomes in disaster risk, resilience, climate, health, WASH, education, social protection, gender, food systems, infrastructure, monitoring, finance or operations to the listed requirements. State Nepali and English ability accurately; other languages can be relevant to local engagement depending on the duty station.
4Confirm ordinary work or official-status support
Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs states that foreigners working in Nepal must obtain a work permit and the corresponding visa. Eligible international-organization personnel and their families may use an official visa or protocol route under Foreign Ministry processes, depending on formal appointment and recognition. National and General Service candidates should not assume visa or work authorization will be facilitated.
5Prepare for assessment and relocation checks
Expect written tests, technical exercises, competency interviews and references. Before accepting, confirm legal employer, duration, pay, insurance, medical clearance, duty station, travel, work-permit or protocol process, relocation support and family eligibility. A selection outcome does not itself authorize work or residence.
Work permits, employment visas and official protocol visas
Ordinary foreign employment requires a Ministry of Home Affairs work permit and employment visa. Eligible international-organization officials and family members may instead use an official-visa process with Foreign Ministry recommendation and accreditation. This is not automatic: employer, appointment, nationality and contract determine the route. Local staff, consultants and interns should not assume the same status. Ask HR to confirm and arrange documentation before travel.

Nepal International Careers FAQs
Do I need Nepali nationality for an IGO job in Nepal?
Not for every position. International appointments and international consultancies can be open to eligible external candidates, while National Officer, General Service and national-consultancy roles often require Nepali nationality or local work eligibility. Follow the specific vacancy's nationality wording.
Is Kathmandu the only relevant IGO duty station?
Kathmandu is the main coordination hub, but Janakpur, Nepalgunj, Butwal and other locations support provincial and field programmes. A Kathmandu contract may require country travel, and a provincial role may carry different operational and relocation conditions. Check the notice's actual duty-station line.
Is Nepali required?
It depends on the role. Nepali is important for local government, community and nationally recruited work, while English is widely used for international coordination and technical reporting. Some positions may value additional local languages. The vacancy's requirement, not the employer's international identity, controls.
Will an IGO arrange my Nepal work visa?
Do not assume so. Ordinary foreign work requires a Ministry of Home Affairs permit and the appropriate visa. Eligible internationally recruited officials may use an employer-managed official or protocol route, but it depends on formal status. National, local, consultant and intern terms can be different.
Can I apply without prior UN experience?
Yes when the notice does not require it. Government, NGO, research, private-sector, development or emergency experience can be competitive when it directly proves the listed expertise. Use measurable examples in disaster risk, health, WASH, climate, social policy, operations or programme delivery.
Do all Nepal employers use one recruitment portal?
No. UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, IOM, UNOPS, UN Volunteers, Secretariat bodies and NGOs use separate career systems. IGOJobs helps compare opportunities, but the application must be submitted only through the official portal named in the original notice.
