Job Description

The Protection Intern – Translation supports UNHCR’s Protection Unit in Algiers by interpreting between staff and asylum seekers or refugees, identifying protection needs and assisting counselling. The full-time role also supports refugee status determination, resettlement, case prioritisation, records, briefings, referrals and coordination with protection colleagues and partners.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Interpret and translate between UNHCR staff and asylum seekers or refugees in individual interviews and multilateral meetings
  • Identify Persons with Specific Needs and document their needs and protection risks
  • Assist protection counselling for Persons with Specific Needs, asylum seekers and refugees
  • Support refugee status determination and resettlement through country-of-origin research, legal analysis and case triage
  • Help determine responses and referrals to partners or relevant UNHCR units
  • Maintain accurate interaction, case and follow-up records and prepare briefings or summaries
  • Coordinate with UNHCR protection staff and partners to support timely protection assistance
  • Attend team briefings, trainings and relevant inter-agency meetings

Role Requirements

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student at an IAU/UNESCO-accredited university or higher-education facility, or a recent graduate who completed studies within 2 years of applying
  • Completed at least 2 years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to UNHCR work
  • Very good spoken and written Arabic, French and English at minimum C1 level
  • Must not have exhausted the maximum cumulative UNHCR internship period, including prior internships
  • A parent, child or sibling relationship, including step-relations, to a current UNHCR staff member or affiliate makes a candidate ineligible
  • Selected candidate must provide health insurance for the assigned location and a medical certificate of fitness for work and travel

Desired Criteria

  • University degree in interpretation or translation between Arabic, French and English, or practical experience in this field, is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with registration and scheduling software is desirable
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills are desirable

  • Full-time onsite internship, Sunday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
