Job Description

Supports UNHCR's community-based protection strategy in Huye by engaging refugee and host communities, monitoring protection risks and strengthening local protection networks. The international UN Volunteer contributes to outreach, participatory assessments, referrals, partner coordination, protection data and accountability mechanisms that enable inclusive, people-centred protection responses.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of UNHCR's community-based protection strategy at field level
  • Conduct community outreach, protection monitoring and participatory assessments
  • Strengthen refugee committees, women and youth groups and protection focal points
  • Support identification, referral and follow-up of persons with specific needs
  • Support prevention and response to gender-based violence, child protection and other protection risks
  • Coordinate with government counterparts, NGOs, community leaders and other local stakeholders
  • Collect, document and analyse protection data for reports and updates
  • Support feedback and complaint mechanisms and follow up community concerns
  • Monitor partner protection activities and provide feedback to supervisors

Role Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Development Studies, Law, Human Rights, Sociology, Psychology, International Relations or a related field
  • English fluency
  • Willingness and ability to conduct community outreach, field monitoring and participatory activities
  • Ability to engage respectfully with people from diverse cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds
  • Basic skills in data collection, documentation and reporting

Desired Criteria

  • Experience with vulnerable populations, community groups or grassroots organizations
  • Prior experience in refugee, displacement or emergency contexts
  • Familiarity with referral mechanisms and coordination with service providers
  • Previous volunteer or cross-cultural experience
  • French language skills
