Working with IMF

Working at the IMF means applying economic, financial, legal, operational or technical expertise to questions that matter directly to national policy: how a country can stabilize inflation, manage public debt, strengthen its financial system, improve revenue, respond to a balance-of-payments shock, or build institutions able to make sounder decisions. The Fund’s three core activities—economic surveillance, lending and capacity development—give the work a distinctive rhythm.

Why Work at IMF?

  • Influence consequential economic policy

Influence fiscal, monetary and financial policies across the Fund’s 191-country membership.

  • Connect analysis with country action

Combine country missions, analytical writing and technical assistance in one economics career.

  • Work across demanding disciplines

Collaborate with economists, lawyers, data specialists and technologists on consequential global problems.

How to Apply for IMF Jobs

Once you find a suitable IMF vacancy on IGO Jobs or the IMF careers page, submit your application through the IMF's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.

Official IMF application route ↗
1Choose the right IMF recruitment stream

Start on the official IMF careers site and identify whether the vacancy is an experienced economist, specialized professional, support, internship, Research Analyst Program or Economist Program opportunity. Check the specific notice closely: programme routes can have their own eligibility, timing and assessment process.

2Apply through IMF My Jobs

Open the vacancy in the IMF **My Jobs** portal, which runs on Workday, and create or sign in to your candidate account. The IMF says it reviews only applications submitted through this site, so an emailed résumé, informal expression of interest or external profile is not an application.

3Complete the online experience and qualification fields

Fill out the application completely, with relevant descriptions of your experience and qualifications rather than relying on job titles alone. A résumé is mandatory, and uploading it at the beginning can populate some fields; check every populated entry carefully against the vacancy’s stated requirements.

4Add documents in the required IMF format

Attach a tailored cover letter under **My Experience** using the “Resume/CV” upload field, along with any relevant supporting material. IMF permits up to five files, each no larger than 250 KB, in .doc, .pdf, .rtf, .txt or .html format. Applications and attachments must be in English; do not upload images, ZIP files, external-site links or password-protected documents.

5Submit a final, accurate application

Review all fields and documents before submitting. IMF sends an email confirmation for every submission, and the application will appear in **Candidate Home**. It may be withdrawn after submission, but it cannot be altered or updated, so do not treat the submitted record as a draft you can later revise.

6Prepare for IMF’s role-specific assessment process

The IMF says applications usually receive an initial review within a week after a vacancy closes. Interested departments may hold a preliminary phone, online, in-person or HireVue interview. Final interviews are normally Washington, DC panel interviews, and written communication, computer or other technical tests may be added. Programme vacancies are reviewed on a rolling basis and can involve extra stages.

Recruitment safety: No. The IMF warns that it does not charge a fee during recruitment and that official communications use an @imf.org email address. Treat any job offer that requests money as fraudulent, and verify the vacancy through IMF My Jobs or the official careers website before sharing documents or personal information.

Frequently asked questions about IMF careers

Where do I apply for IMF jobs?+

Apply through the official IMF **My Jobs** portal, reached from the careers site and operated on Workday. The IMF says it only reviews applications submitted there. Create a candidate account, open the exact vacancy and complete the online form; a separate email, LinkedIn profile or speculative CV does not replace a submitted portal application.

What documents does the IMF require?+

A résumé is required for the IMF to consider an application. The IMF also directs candidates to add a tailored cover letter through the “Resume/CV” upload field under **My Experience**. You may attach up to five files, each up to 250 KB, but they must be English-language, accepted document formats and not password-protected.

Can I change an IMF application after submitting it?+

No. The IMF states that you may withdraw a submitted application, but you cannot alter or update it afterward. Before submitting, verify the online work history, qualification details, contact information, attached résumé and cover letter. You can monitor the submitted record and its status through **Candidate Home** in My Jobs.

What happens after I submit an IMF application?+

The IMF says applications normally receive an initial review within a week of the closing date. If a hiring department is interested, it may invite you to a phone, online, in-person or HireVue preliminary interview. Final interviews are typically panel interviews in Washington, DC, with written or technical tests used for some roles.

What kinds of careers does the IMF offer?+

IMF opportunities extend beyond economists. The organization recruits experienced professionals in finance, law, accounting, communications, human resources, IT, language services, procurement, security and other functions. It also has structured entry routes including the Economist Program, Research Analyst Program and Fund Internship Program, each with distinct eligibility rules.

Does the IMF charge a recruitment fee?+

No. The IMF warns that it does not charge a fee during recruitment and that official communications use an @imf.org email address. Treat any job offer that requests money as fraudulent, and verify the vacancy through IMF My Jobs or the official careers website before sharing documents or personal information.
