Job Description

UNDP seeks a Social and Environmental Safeguards Officer in Kampala to lead safeguards implementation across the Uganda Country Office portfolio. The officer develops and reviews safeguards tools and plans, assesses environmental and social risks, monitors compliance with UNDP standards, maintains risk and incident records, and prepares technical briefs and reports for project teams and.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Develop and review safeguards instruments, checklists, guidelines and tools
  • Prepare safeguards monitoring plans and review project compliance with UNDP and Government of Uganda requirements
  • Review environmental and social management frameworks and recommend remedial actions
  • Assess environmental and social risks and identify mitigation and management measures
  • Update social and environmental screening procedures and project risk logs
  • Prepare technical briefs and compliance reports and support quality control of monitoring products

Role Requirements

  • Advanced degree in environmental sciences, natural resources management or a related discipline
  • At least two years of experience in social and environmental safeguards or impact assessment in international development
  • Sound understanding of Microsoft Office software packages
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

Desired Criteria

  • Experience with UNDP projects
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams
  • Experience implementing social and environmental safeguard policies
  • Experience conducting social and environmental screening under SES guidelines
  • Experience in gender analysis and gender reporting
