Job Description

The National AFOLU GIS/MRV Specialist supports FAO and Papua New Guinea counterparts to strengthen forest and land-use monitoring, climate reporting and REDD+ implementation. Based in the CCDA Satellite Land Monitoring System Laboratory, the role manages geospatial data, GIS and remote-sensing workflows, national MRV reporting, forest mapping, risk analysis and capacity development.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Compile spatial and activity data for AFOLU reporting and NDC monitoring
  • Maintain GIS and MRV workflows, inventories, records and data archives
  • Support forest benchmark mapping and annual forest-state monitoring
  • Develop land-use, commodity, plantation and road-network datasets
  • Analyse deforestation and degradation drivers and prepare risk maps
  • Prepare maps, statistics, metadata and technical documentation
  • Provide GIS, remote-sensing and data-management support and training
  • Support REDD+ readiness and national climate-reporting processes

Role Requirements

  • University degree in a related discipline
  • At least five years of experience in GIS, remote sensing, geospatial analysis or AFOLU MRV
  • Working knowledge of English
  • National of Papua New Guinea
  • Proficiency in a desktop GIS platform and relevant geospatial tools

Desired Criteria

  • Experience supporting climate reporting, REDD+ or NDC monitoring
  • Experience in capacity development and knowledge management
