Job Description

Handles appeals and disciplinary matters within the United Nations Secretariat's internal justice framework. The officer researches and interprets legal issues, prepares opinions and submissions, assesses evidence and represents the Organization in administrative proceedings, helping the Administrative Law Division apply standards of conduct and resolve personnel-related disputes fairly and consistently.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Handle appeals and legal issues involving international, public, national and administrative law
  • Conduct legal research and prepare opinions, studies, briefs, reports and correspondence
  • Review legal documents and identify material issues, similarities and inconsistencies
  • Prepare legal submissions and motions for investigations and proceedings
  • Assess evidence for relevance and admissibility and prepare briefs of evidence
  • Support representation before arbitral tribunals and administrative proceedings
  • Provide legal advice on human-resources and administrative matters
  • Guide junior staff on legal work

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in law, or a first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience
  • At least five years of progressively responsible legal experience
  • At least two years of litigation experience at national or international level, including first-hand experience appearing and leading witness evidence before a court, tribunal or equivalent body
  • International experience in administrative or employment and labour law
  • English is required
