Job Description

Provides technical support to FAO Nepal's invasive-alien-species project, strengthening prevention, control and field-management measures. The expert contributes to risk assessment, early warning, rapid response, field demonstrations and monitoring, while producing technical guidance, training materials and knowledge products that help national and community partners reduce biodiversity and livelihood impacts.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Review project plans and guidance on invasive-species prevention, control and risk assessment
  • Develop practical biodiversity-threat assessment methods and species-prioritisation criteria
  • Support field assessments of invasive species, affected areas and invasion pathways
  • Compile field findings and recommendations into technical reports
  • Support site-specific control, restoration and re-invasion-prevention demonstrations
  • Develop early-warning, rapid-response and monitoring formats and protocols
  • Contribute technical inputs to species-identification and monitoring applications
  • Prepare training materials, knowledge products and the final technical report

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in ecology, biodiversity conservation, botany, zoology, forestry, agriculture, plant protection, natural-resource management, environmental science or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in invasive-alien-species management, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, plant protection, pest management or forest and agriculture ecology
  • Working knowledge of English
  • Ability to work in English and Nepali
  • Nationality of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal

Desired Criteria

  • Knowledge of Farmer Field School, Integrated Pest Management, community-based monitoring, participatory learning or local capacity-building approaches
  • Experience working with government, research, quarantine, customs, farmer, forest-user, Indigenous Peoples and local-community groups
