Job Description

Develops and strengthens data-protection procedures, guidance and controls across FAO’s data lifecycle. The specialist will advise offices on compliance and risk, respond to data-subject and internal requests, create training materials, report to oversight bodies and coordinate with United Nations counterparts on data-protection and intellectual-property policy.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Draft and update operational data-protection guidance and procedures
  • Guide divisions in implementing data-protection processes, standards and technical controls
  • Respond to data-subject requests submitted under the Data Protection Policy
  • Advise FAO units and offices on data-protection matters
  • Develop training and awareness materials on data protection
  • Report on data-protection status to FAO oversight bodies and governing bodies
  • Represent FAO and coordinate with UN-system counterparts on data-protection and intellectual-property policy

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in law, data protection, information management, information systems management, business, information security, computer science, information technology or a related discipline, or a Bachelor’s degree with two additional years of experience
  • At least five years of relevant experience in data protection, privacy, information security, data ethics or a related discipline
  • Working knowledge of English

Desired Criteria

  • Experience working in more than one location or area of work
  • Experience in international organisations and their legal framework
  • Experience with data-protection frameworks including ISO 27701, GDPR or privacy regulation
  • Experience managing data-provider requests, concerns and data breaches
  • Data-protection certification such as CIPP, CIPM, CIPT or CISSP
