Job Description

Supports WHO’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Environment and Health to strengthen public-health responses to harmful chemicals, lead exposure and pesticide poisoning in the Western Pacific. The consultant develops technical packages and training, analyses poisoning risks and poison-centre capacities, supports International Health Regulations implementation, and advances partnerships, resource mobilisation and practical country response measures.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Review and contribute technical inputs to lead-poisoning prevention materials
  • Develop and test training modules for healthcare providers on lead exposure
  • Compile and analyse pesticide-poisoning case studies and data
  • Prepare technical reports on poisoning in Western Pacific Member States
  • Support national capacity for chemical-event response under International Health Regulations
  • Update poison-centre information and assess capacities through questionnaires
  • Support poison-centre network meetings and technical coordination
  • Develop partnerships and resource-mobilisation activities for chemical-exposure response

Role Requirements

  • First university degree in Toxicology, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Health, Ecology, Natural Science or a related field
  • At least 5 years of national and international experience in management of chemicals of public-health concern or chemical-poisoning prevention and control
  • Expert knowledge of English

Desired Criteria

  • Experience with national and international chemical-safety and health work
  • Poison-centre operations, surveillance and reporting-system experience
  • Experience working with UN agencies
  • Familiarity with WHO chemicals, chemical-safety and International Health Regulations policies

  • On-site consultancy in Seoul for eleven months with possible travel for capacity building and WHO meetings
