Job Description

Strengthens Comoros’ national statistical capacity for fisheries data by mapping sources, assessing collection mechanisms and standardising indicators. The consultant develops a data catalogue and profile report, works with INSEED, UNSD and sector partners, builds capacity for SDG 14.4.1 and fishing-effort estimates, and recommends secure, sustainable data-sharing and reporting platforms.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Develop a methodology and implementation schedule for fisheries data mapping
  • Assess data-collection tools and align methods with SDG and FAO standards
  • Identify data producers and inventory reporting challenges
  • Assess fisheries data sources for relevance and quality
  • Develop profiles of source format, structure, coverage, disaggregation and quality
  • Recommend improvements to data collection, estimation and handling of missing data
  • Draft and present fisheries data catalogue and diagnostic reports
  • Build capacity to calculate fisheries-related indicators and improve data sharing

Role Requirements

  • Advanced degree in economics, statistics, mathematics, environmental sciences, social sciences or a related field with five years of data-analysis or data-management experience, or a bachelor’s degree with two additional years of experience
  • Experience working with a national statistical system, particularly environment data
  • Experience with data disaggregated by geography, sex and population groups for sustainable development
  • Full command of spoken and written French and English

Desired Criteria

  • Experience measuring economic activity, environmental change or fisheries-related data
  • Knowledge of another official UN language
