Job Description

UNSOH is seeking an Aviation Safety Officer to lead the mission's aviation safety programme in Port-au-Prince. The role develops emergency-response and risk-management arrangements, investigates aviation occurrences, evaluates air operators and airfields, tracks safety performance, and advises mission leaders and host-country aviation authorities on corrective measures.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the Mission Aviation Safety Programme
  • Develop and communicate the Aviation Emergency Response Plan
  • Coordinate aviation safety drills and exercises
  • Monitor integration of aviation risk management into UN aviation activities
  • Analyze safety performance indicators and propose corrective measures
  • Investigate aviation occurrences, accidents and hazards involving UN air assets
  • Conduct safety surveys of airfields and helicopter landing sites
  • Maintain the aviation safety database and provide safety briefings

Role Requirements

  • Advanced degree in air transportation, aviation safety management, aerospace/aeronautical engineering or air traffic management; first-level degree route requires relevant training, certification and two additional years
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in air transportation, air traffic control operations, aviation safety or aviation engineering, including one year internationally
  • Commercial pilot, flight operations officer/dispatcher, air traffic controller, aeronautical/maintenance engineer or equivalent military qualification
  • Training and certification in safety management
  • Experience in international operations in a post-conflict environment

Desired Criteria

  • Expert knowledge of aviation safety management, accident investigation and prevention, and ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices
  • Experience in the UN system or a comparable international organization
