Job Description

Leads coordination and technical support for UNEP's United for Efficiency projects across East, Southern and West Africa. The specialist helps governments implement and harmonise energy-performance standards for cooling equipment, advances regional policy work and develops funding proposals. The role connects authorities, regional bodies and partners to accelerate energy-efficient markets.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Coordinate regional and national energy-efficiency project activities, timelines, resources and partner communications
  • Support EAC member states implementing harmonised standards for refrigerators and air conditioners
  • Work with SACREEE and SADCSTAN on commercial-refrigerator market assessments and regional standards harmonisation
  • Provide project-management and technical support for the AGORA project in Nigeria
  • Support Liberia's assessment of HCFC and HFC consumption and emissions for its national climate commitment update
  • Advise governments on policy and regulatory frameworks and recommend improvements
  • Identify funding opportunities and support proposals, donor reports, outreach materials and regional presentations

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in energy or environmental policy, energy, environmental or international economics, or a related engineering or science field
  • At least 7 years of professional experience with energy policies and international development programmes
  • Knowledge of ECOWAS, SADC and EAC energy situations, policies and legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience coordinating energy-efficient lighting, appliances or equipment projects
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

  • Experience developing outreach material that secures officials' commitment to energy policies
  • Experience building coalitions for new initiatives
  • Experience coordinating regional harmonisation strategies in developing countries
