How to Apply for ICRC Jobs
Once you find a suitable ICRC vacancy on IGO Jobs or the ICRC careers page, submit your application through ICRC's official recruitment portal. Below is a guide on how to apply.
Official ICRC application route ↗1Identify the appropriate ICRC employment route
Read the notice and establish whether it is a locally recruited resident post, a Geneva headquarters role, an internationally mobile role, or an associate or traineeship opportunity. For resident jobs, use the Local Opportunities route and select your country of residence; mobile posts carry distinct mobility requirements.
2Search only current official vacancies and create an account
Use the ICRC jobs page to filter by location, job category and contract type, then open the specific vacancy. The ICRC does not accept unsolicited applications. Register on the career website to create an applicant account, upload documents and monitor the status of submitted applications.
3Tailor the CV and cover letter to the mandate and role
Use the job description to show the relevant technical results, language skills and contextual experience. The ICRC specifically asks applicants to explain why they want to join and to adapt both the CV and cover letter to the particular role. Address its humanitarian mission and values honestly rather than sending a generic application.
4Complete and submit the online application before closing
Fill in every required field and upload the requested documents through your career-site account before the deadline. You can amend stored documents for subsequent roles, but make sure the version attached reflects this application. Retain the submission record and check the portal or email for any contact from recruitment.
5Prepare for ICRC’s role-specific assessment stages
After screening, shortlisted candidates are invited by email to the next stage. Depending on the role, this can include a pre-recorded video response, online language assessment, technical test or other practical assessment. Prepare from the advertised requirements and be ready to explain your judgement in difficult, multicultural operational settings.
6Complete interviews and understand mobile-pool selection
ICRC may use HR, technical and panel interviews, followed by background checks that can include prior-employer checks for criminal, disciplinary or misconduct information. Resident selection generally leads to hiring. For mobile roles, successful candidates normally enter a talent pool first; a later assignment depends on need, availability and medical clearance.

Where do I apply for ICRC jobs?+
Apply only through a currently advertised role on the ICRC career site; unsolicited applications are not accepted. Create an online profile, upload the tailored documents requested in that vacancy and use the account to track its status. For locally recruited jobs, select your country of residence under Local Opportunities.
What does selection for an ICRC mobile role mean?+
Mobile employees are internationally recruited by ICRC headquarters and can be assigned where operational need exists, not their home country. Selection normally adds a candidate to a talent pool rather than creating a contract. A first mission depends on availability, needs and medical clearance; dependants cannot accompany the first 24 months.
What happens after ICRC shortlists me?+
Recruitment starts with screening against the role and ICRC values. Shortlisted candidates receive an email and may complete a pre-recorded video, language assessment or technical test, followed by HR, technical or panel interviews. The ICRC also conducts background checks, which can include checking misconduct information with former employers.
Does ICRC offer roles for recent graduates?+
The Associate Programme is for new graduates with no more than two years of experience. It offers paid, full-time traineeships lasting six to 12 months, principally in Geneva. It is not a guaranteed route to ICRC employment. Some delegations separately advertise internships when locally needed.
Can I volunteer with the ICRC?+
No. The ICRC does not recruit volunteers and directs people who want to volunteer to their National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society. If an earlier application was unsuccessful, its careers FAQ says you may apply again for another vacancy; focus on roles that match your profile and follow its application-preparation guidance.
Do I need humanitarian experience and languages for ICRC roles?+
Requirements are set in the individual vacancy, but the ICRC says English is essential for most roles and French, Arabic, Spanish or Russian are often advantageous. For professional posts it generally seeks at least two years of relevant experience. Mobile roles need evidence that you can adapt to challenging international environments.
