About Zambia
Zambia is a high-plateau southern African country shaped by river systems and mining. Lusaka is the main government and commercial hub; Copperbelt towns are industrial, while Livingstone and provincial centres link tourism and agriculture.
Relocation needs planning around housing, transport, healthcare and seasonal conditions. Lusaka traffic, private transport and secure accommodation shape routines; power interruptions and long travel distances affect work beyond the urban corridor. Private medical cover, schooling, domestic flights and vehicle costs alter household budgets.
Zambia combines a UN country presence with regional policy work. Lusaka hosts the UN Country Team, ECA’s Southern Africa office and an ILO country office serving Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Work spans health systems, food security, refugee response, education, gender equality, governance, climate resilience, energy, regional integration and inclusive economic transformation.

Working in Zambia
Zambia’s international market is in Lusaka, including UN House and ECA’s Southern Africa office. It reaches provincial work in health, agriculture, energy, regional policy, refugee and host communities. UNDP, UNICEF, WFP, UNHCR, IOM, WHO, FAO, ILO, UN Women, UNFPA, UNIDO and ECA are prominent. Status matters: internationally recruited staff, National Officers, General Service staff, consultants, interns, UN Volunteers and Zambian-law personnel can have different eligibility, tax, insurance, immigration, relocation and pension terms. Confirm the employer and category before comparing offers.
Why Zambia
Broad country-team platform
Twenty-four UN entities link national development, humanitarian support and public-service delivery.
Southern Africa policy hub
Lusaka-based ECA and ILO offices create regional economic and labour-policy work.
Energy and resilience portfolio
Energy, mining, food systems and health create cross-sector development opportunities.
How to apply for UN jobs in Zambia
Compare Zambia vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then apply through the official system named by the legal employer. The UN Country Team, ECA, ILO, UNDP, UNICEF, WFP, IOM, UNHCR, development banks and NGOs do not share one recruitment account. Check whether the role is based in Lusaka, has provincial travel or serves a regional portfolio before tailoring your application.
1Use the employer’s named portal
Open the original notice and verify the employer, deadline, duty station, grade and contract type. Use UN Careers and Inspira for Secretariat and ECA posts where the notice directs you there; UNDP, UNICEF, WFP, IOM, UNHCR, ILO and other entities use their own systems. A profile created for one organisation does not automatically transfer to another.
2Confirm eligibility and category
Separate internationally recruited, National Officer, General Service, consultancy, internship, UN Volunteer and locally recruited roles. National and local positions can require Zambian nationality, residence or local labour-market eligibility. Record every required education, years of experience, language, technical skill and competency before applying; desirable criteria strengthen an application but do not replace minimum eligibility.
3Evidence the relevant portfolio
Use measurable examples in health systems, food security, refugee response, protection, education, gender equality, climate resilience, energy, governance, regional integration, procurement or programme management. English is the official working language, while local-language ability can strengthen community-facing work. Follow the specific vacancy’s language and technical criteria rather than relying on a broad country assumption.
4Submit the requested materials
Complete all mandatory application fields and supply the CV, personal-history form, cover letter, technical proposal, writing sample, references or financial offer requested. For consultancy work, address the deliverables, methodology and availability directly. Save the vacancy notice and your submitted version, as both are useful for written exercises, interviews and later offer clarification.
5Verify the offer and relocation route
Expect written tests, case exercises, competency interviews, presentations or technical assessments. Before accepting, confirm the legal employer, contract duration, remuneration, tax and insurance treatment, pension, medical cover, travel, family provisions and relocation support. Ask HR whether ordinary immigration procedures or an eligible diplomatic-permit arrangement applies, and wait for written instructions before travel or housing commitments.
Employment permits and diplomatic status
Ordinary foreign employment uses immigration permits, including Employment Permits. Eligible officials of recognised international organisations may receive a Diplomatic Permit with Foreign Affairs support, a note verbale/accreditation and a diplomatic identity card. It is not automatic. The Immigration Act addresses when a diplomatic-permit holder may combine it with an employment permit. The employer confirms route for the post, nationality, duration and dependants after selection.

Zambia International Careers FAQs
Do I need Zambian nationality for an international-organization job?
No, not for every role. Internationally recruited posts can be open to qualified candidates of many nationalities, while National Officer, General Service, consultancy and locally recruited positions may require Zambian nationality, residence or local labour-market eligibility. The vacancy’s category and eligibility text are controlling. A Lusaka duty station alone does not establish whether an overseas applicant is eligible.
Where are most international jobs based in Zambia?
Lusaka is the main hub, hosting UN House, many country offices and ECA’s Southern Africa office. Some roles have provincial travel, work with refugee and host communities, or serve regional portfolios beyond Zambia. Check the formal duty station, reporting line, travel percentage and whether a role is country-facing or subregional before comparing employment conditions or planning a relocation.
Is English sufficient for Zambia-based international roles?
English is Zambia’s official language and is widely used in government and international work. Local-language ability can nevertheless strengthen roles involving communities, field teams, service users or provincial partners. Particular employers may also set their own language standards for regional work. Use the vacancy’s required and desired language fields as authoritative rather than treating a general country fact as a complete eligibility test.
Does every international employee receive a Zambian Diplomatic Permit?
No. Zambia’s immigration rules make a Diplomatic Permit available to eligible representatives, officials and employees of prescribed or recognised international organisations, subject to the required Foreign Affairs and accreditation documentation. Ordinary foreign employment follows the normal permit route. The legal employer, staff status, nationality, recognition and contract circumstances determine eligibility; a UN-linked office address does not establish it.
What should I plan for before relocating to Zambia?
Plan around the actual duty station rather than Lusaka alone. Housing, private healthcare, traffic, domestic flights, power reliability, school availability and field-travel needs can vary significantly between the capital area, Copperbelt and provincial locations. Ask the employer about medical cover, security support, transport, travel policies, family arrangements and practical arrival assistance before signing a lease or arranging a shipment.
Can I apply without previous UN experience?
Yes, if the notice does not require it. Show exactly how your education, experience, technical skills and competencies meet every mandatory criterion through measurable results from government, civil society, research, health, humanitarian, private-sector or community work. Prior UN service can help in some competitions, but it never replaces essential qualifications, local-eligibility conditions or the employer’s assessment process.
