Job Description

Conducts a technical assessment of Jamaica’s weather-radar capability for WMO’s Caribbean early-warning project. The home-based consultant reviews radar systems, sites, coverage, operations and maintenance; evaluates upgrade options; and delivers prioritised recommendations for investment. A field mission to Jamaica supports inspections, stakeholder engagement and practical recommendations.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Assess weather radar hardware, infrastructure, software and operational performance
  • Evaluate radar sites, coverage scenarios and alternative locations
  • Compare repair, rehabilitation, relocation and replacement options
  • Assess staffing, training, maintenance and long-term sustainability needs
  • Produce a technical assessment report with prioritised investment recommendations

Role Requirements

  • Advanced degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, engineering, remote sensing, radar engineering, physics or related discipline
  • At least ten years of experience in weather radar systems and technical assessment
  • Experience assessing operational weather radar systems and radar network design
  • Excellent knowledge of English

Desired Criteria

  • Experience with National Meteorological and Hydrological Services
  • Experience with governments, UN organizations or donor-funded programmes
  • Experience in hurricane-prone environments or small-island developing states
  • Previous professional experience in Jamaica or the Caribbean
