Job Description

The Climate Modelling and Downscaling Expert will help Meteo Rwanda produce, validate and apply high-resolution climate projections for national adaptation and early-warning planning. The home-based consultancy develops downscaling methods, analyses observations and model outputs, builds decision products, and transfers datasets, scripts, training and documentation to strengthen national capacity.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Review national policies, climate studies, observational datasets and existing projections to define technical requirements
  • Develop a methodological approach, institutional engagement plan and training plan with Meteo Rwanda and national stakeholders
  • Prepare and quality-control historical rainfall and temperature observations for model evaluation and validation
  • Evaluate climate-model products against observations and apply selected downscaling and bias-correction techniques
  • Generate and validate high-resolution projections for temperature, precipitation and climate extremes across Rwanda
  • Train and mentor Meteo Rwanda staff in modelling, downscaling, validation, uncertainty analysis and interpretation
  • Produce and hand over organized datasets, maps, model outputs, scripts, codes and technical documentation
  • Prepare technical reports and decision-oriented climate-information products and disseminate results to stakeholders

Role Requirements

  • University degree, preferably a Master's or higher, in meteorology, climate science, atmospheric science or a closely related discipline
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in climate modelling
  • Professional experience in meteorology, climate science, climate modelling, climate projections and climate downscaling
  • Experience with Global Climate Model datasets, climate-change scenarios and downscaling of climate-change projections
  • Practical experience in statistical or dynamical downscaling, bias correction, climate-model evaluation and validation
  • Experience processing, analysing and visualizing large climate datasets with relevant computational and geospatial tools
  • Experience developing high-resolution climate projections and training technical capacity in climate modelling or downscaling
  • Excellent oral and written English

Desired Criteria

  • Climate-change and resilience research experience in East Africa is an advantage
  • Relevant scientific publications in meteorology, climate science, climate modelling or climate projections are an advantage
  • Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization is an advantage
