Job Description

OCHA seeks a Public Information Officer in Bunia to support the Ebola response and report to a Senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer. The role leads public-information programmes, media outreach and communications products; monitors public opinion and current events; builds relationships with key constituencies; and uses data visualisation to inform planning, reporting and decision-making.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Implement information programmes that publicise priority issues and major events, including information strategies and follow-up
  • Monitor current events, public opinion and press, identify trends and advise management on responses
  • Promote media coverage through media strategies, outreach, press conferences and information dissemination
  • Produce communications products including press kits, releases, feature articles, speeches, audio-visual materials and radio programmes
  • Prepare drafts for UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books using official documentation and other sources
  • Collect and analyse data and present trends through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data-visualisation methods

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or a related field
  • A first-level university degree may be accepted in combination with qualifying experience
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or a related area
  • Experience managing and generating content for social media platforms
  • English and French are required

Desired Criteria

  • Completion of degree and non-degree programmes in data analytics, business analytics or data science is an advantage
  • Experience in a UN or comparable international-organisation communications environment is desirable
  • Experience engaging with media and writing professionally on humanitarian crises and issues is desirable
  • Experience in humanitarian field operations, health emergencies, or the West and Central Africa Region is desirable
