Job Description
Provides expert medical and medico-legal advice for UN compensation claims and clinical quality assurance. The Medical Officer independently assesses injury, illness and impairment; prepares authoritative opinions for administrative and legal decisions; audits medical facilities; analyses clinical risks and data; and helps strengthen patient safety, clinical governance and healthcare delivery across UN duty stations and field missions.

Summary of Responsibilities
- Conduct independent medical evaluations of complex compensation claims
- Assess causality, severity, permanence and impairment from injury, illness and death
- Prepare medical opinions on prognosis, service attribution and compensation eligibility
- Review medical documentation and prepare reports for administrative, legal and judicial decisions
- Advise on medico-legal and compensation matters
- Conduct clinical audits of UN medical facilities
- Develop recommendations and monitor corrective actions for clinical governance
- Support medical boards, training and evidence-based data analysis
Role Requirements
- Advanced university degree in medicine such as MD or MBBS with postgraduate specialisation, or a first-level medical degree plus two additional years of qualifying clinical experience
- Current unrestricted registration with a medical licensing authority of a United Nations Member State
- Formal training and examination-based certification in independent medical evaluation or permanent-impairment assessment using the AMA Guides or an equivalent methodology
- At least seven years of progressively responsible clinical medicine experience
- At least three years conducting independent medical reviews involving causality, disability, impairment, compensation claims or comparable medico-legal determinations
- Experience authoring evidence-based medical opinions for administrative, insurance, legal or adjudicative decision-making
- English at UN Level II in reading, writing, listening and speaking
Desired Criteria
- Experience conducting clinical audits or healthcare quality reviews
- Experience in international or multi-jurisdictional settings including the United Nations or other international organisations
- Knowledge of French
