Job Description

UNOPS seeks a Legal Specialist to independently provide commercial legal services across a global portfolio. The role advises project offices on agreements, contracts, hosted initiatives and disputes; develops practical policies and controls; manages regional legal support; and strengthens legal knowledge, templates and colleague capability through research, coordination and training.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Advise project offices on commercial matters, legal agreements and the UNOPS legal framework
  • Support partnership, funding, procurement and grant agreements, hosted initiatives and trust funds
  • Represent UNOPS in negotiations with external parties on contracts and agreements
  • Coordinate legal support with business units, local retainers, external counsel and UN legal advisers
  • Recommend policy and operating-standard improvements and strengthen internal controls
  • Maintain legal precedents and templates and deliver commercial-law training
  • Manage regional legal support and coordinate advice on high-risk or novel issues

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in law, or a first-level law degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience
  • At least five years of relevant experience as a lawyer in commercial law, international law, public international law or commercial dispute resolution
  • Proficiency in legal drafting and ability to draft accurately, clearly and concisely under pressure
  • Experience communicating complex legal concepts to a range of audiences
  • Fluent English

Desired Criteria

  • Commercial law experience as legal counsel in a law firm or international organisation is preferred
  • Fluent French is desirable
  • Fluent Spanish is desirable
