Job Description

The Lead Electrical Engineer is a home-based UNOPS retainer providing technical assurance for high-voltage transformers in Papua New Guinea. The specialist reviews manufacturer design submissions, calculations and drawings against IEC standards and contract requirements, advises on corrections, and documents design compliance, residual risks and Factory Acceptance Testing recommendations.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Independently verify manufacturer design calculations, engineering drawings and technical data sheets before manufacture
  • Assess supplier submissions against IEC 60076 standards, contract specifications and approved data sheets
  • Recommend corrections for technical deficiencies and non-compliances to the Technical Lead and Project Manager
  • Prepare technical review reports, marked-up drawings and written corrective recommendations
  • Produce a final design-review close-out memorandum covering compliance, risks and quality recommendations
  • Guide suppliers and manufacturers on required design adjustments and technical clarifications
  • Define Factory Acceptance Testing parameters and technical-verification protocols
  • Document best practices and technical checklists for transformer design reviews

Role Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, power engineering or a closely related discipline with seven years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in a related field with five years of relevant experience
  • Experience in the design, engineering, manufacture, technical review or testing of high-voltage power transformers
  • Experience with transformer manufacturer design documentation and calculation methodologies
  • Fluent English

Desired Criteria

  • Experience working in multicultural environments or UN system organizations in a developing country
  • Experience in development or humanitarian contexts
  • Experience with transformers up to 132 kV and comparable MVA class
  • Practical experience preparing and reviewing detailed transformer design calculations
  • Familiarity with transformer manufacturing and Factory Acceptance Testing
