Job Description
Builds and operates CERN’s next-generation on-premises backup platform for laboratory services. The engineer integrates disk and tape storage, develops C++ and Linux software, tests and commissions tiered S3-based backup services, and investigates operational failures so cold storage, service migrations and long-term data recovery remain reliable at laboratory scale.

Summary of Responsibilities
- Integrate backup orchestration with disk and tape storage
- Develop and maintain client and server software in C++ and Linux
- Configure, test, monitor and alert on the new backup system
- Plan migration of existing services to the future backup solution
- Participate in operations, troubleshooting and team support
- Contribute procedures and documentation for the service
Role Requirements
- Be a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, subject to the stated Associate Membership ceiling exclusions
- Have a university degree and a highest qualification of either a bachelor’s or master’s degree; applicants with a PhD are not eligible
- Have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the respective field
- Have never previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract
- Be experienced in C++ and Python software development on Linux
- Have spoken and written English and commit to learn French
Desired Criteria
- Experience with S3 object storage
- Experience with Ceph, systems integration, backup systems or tiered storage systems
