About Nigeria
Nigeria’s federal structure and regional diversity make urban life highly varied. Lagos is a dense coastal commercial centre, while Kano, Ibadan, Port Harcourt and Enugu offer distinct professional and social settings. A role’s city and state shape everyday experience.
Daily conditions vary by location. Housing, electricity, roads, security, healthcare and schools can differ within major cities. Lagos offers opportunity but demanding commutes; Abuja is more dispersed and car-oriented. Heat, rain, Harmattan dust and traffic call for realistic budgeting, local advice and an employer security plan.
Nigeria’s international work joins national development, regional integration and humanitarian response. Abuja hosts the ECOWAS Commission and a substantial UN presence; north-east roles span protection, recovery, food security, health and displacement. Careers cover governance, peace and security, public health, climate resilience, education and regional economic cooperation.

Working in Nigeria
Abuja is Nigeria’s principal international-employment hub, bringing together the UN country presence and ECOWAS Commission. Lagos, Maiduguri, Kano and other offices add development, public-health, migration and humanitarian roles; the north-east is a distinct field market with heightened operational constraints. Appointment status matters: internationally recruited staff, National Officers, General Service personnel, consultants, secondees and Nigerian-law employees can have different nationality criteria, payroll, insurance, immigration, relocation and family conditions.
Why Nigeria
West African policy centre
ECOWAS and UN teams connect Nigerian work with regional policy and decision-making.
Major humanitarian response landscape
North-east operations combine emergency relief, protection, recovery and resilience in complex environments.
Scale across diverse regions
Large programmes need policy, health, operations, data and partnership specialists across Nigeria.
How to apply for UN jobs in Nigeria
Compare Nigeria vacancies on IGOJobs.com, then apply through the named employer’s official system. ECOWAS, the UN Secretariat, UNICEF, UNHCR, IOM, UNDP, WHO, WFP and other employers do not share one recruitment account. Confirm the duty station and category before applying: Abuja, Lagos, Maiduguri and other locations can have very different operational, security and relocation conditions.
1Use the legal employer’s official route
Open and save the complete vacancy notice. ECOWAS publishes vacancies on its own jobs page; UN Secretariat posts use Inspira when the notice says so; UNICEF, UNHCR, IOM and other entities maintain separate career systems. Check the legal employer, closing date, duty station, contract type and eligibility before preparing an application.
2Establish the relevant recruitment pool
Read nationality and local-eligibility rules first. National Officer posts normally require Nigerian nationality, while General Service and other locally recruited roles can require local eligibility. International Professional, specialist and consultancy appointments may have wider recruitment pools, but the announcement—not the organization’s name—determines who may apply.
3Match evidence, languages and portfolio
English is central to formal administration and international recruitment. Hausa, Kanuri, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin, French and other languages can be valuable where the role involves communities, field delivery, regional work or interpretation. Use measurable evidence relevant to governance, health, protection, WASH, education, logistics, data, climate, recovery or programme operations.
4Confirm appointment and immigration status
Distinguish an international appointment from a National Officer, General Service, consultancy, internship or Nigerian-law contract. Ordinary foreign employment normally requires employer sponsorship through the expatriate-quota, STR visa and CERPAC process. Eligible officials under a recognised host-state arrangement may follow another employer-managed route; do not assume it applies to every organization or contract.
5Prepare for assessment and relocation
Expect screening, written or technical exercises, competency interviews, reference checks and, where relevant, security clearance. Before accepting, confirm the precise duty station, security arrangements, accommodation, travel rules, family eligibility, health and evacuation cover, salary basis, tax treatment, relocation support and who manages documentation. Do not relocate on the basis of a verbal offer.
Protocol arrangements and ordinary work residence
International-organization status is not a general Nigerian work permit. A staff member covered by a recognised host-state arrangement may follow employer-led protocol documentation; eligibility depends on the legal employer and appointment. Ordinary foreign employment normally requires the employer’s expatriate quota and an STR visa, followed by the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC). Confirm the route, duty station and family documentation with HR before travel.

Nigeria International Careers FAQs
Can non-Nigerians apply for international jobs in Nigeria?
Yes, where eligibility permits. International Professional, specialist and some consultancy roles may be recruited beyond Nigeria, subject to the organisation and funding. National Officer posts normally require Nigerian nationality; General Service and local contracts often require local eligibility. The vacancy notice, not the title, decides.
Is Abuja the only relevant international duty station?
Abuja is the main headquarters and diplomatic hub, but not the entire market. Lagos has programme, partnership and operational work. Maiduguri and other field sites offer protection, health, education, logistics and emergency roles. Location shapes daily life, travel and security, so assess the named duty station—not Nigeria as a single market.
Which languages matter for Nigeria-based roles?
English is central to federal administration and normally used in formal applications. Hausa, Kanuri, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin, French or other languages can strengthen community, field, regional or interpretation work, but only the vacancy establishes a requirement. State proficiency honestly and show how it supports the role.
Will an international employer arrange Nigerian work documentation?
Do not assume a contract creates a visa route. Ordinary foreign work usually needs an employer-sponsored expatriate quota, STR visa and CERPAC. Eligible staff of organisations under recognised host-state arrangements may use another employer-managed route. Before travel, ask HR who employs you, who handles documents and what applies to dependants.
Are field assignments in Nigeria difficult to relocate to?
Conditions are location-specific. North-east humanitarian roles can involve strong security controls, restricted movement, approved accommodation, travel clearances and changing access. These requirements do not transfer across employers or cities. Request the recruiting organization’s current security and relocation briefing before deciding.
Can I apply without previous UN experience?
Yes. Recruiters assess whether you can do the stated work, not whether you worked for the UN. Match technical requirements with measurable evidence from government, civil society, research, private-sector or donor-funded work. For Nigeria-facing roles, demonstrate stakeholder management, context awareness and respect across diverse communities.
