Job Description
Investigates how quantum science and technology can strengthen Alliance maritime capabilities within CMRE’s MUSE programme. The role conducts research on quantum communications, photonics and sensing, defines security scenarios, publishes results and contributes to NATO projects, workshops and conferences while linking quantum work with climate, antisubmarine and data-environment programmes.

Summary of Responsibilities
- Investigate the impact of quantum science and technology on Alliance capabilities in the maritime domain
- Execute research defining security scenarios for quantum communications, photonics and sensing
- Author scientific articles for international peer-reviewed journals and internal reports
- Contribute to the organisation and execution of NATO workshops and conferences
- Participate in multinational quantum-science and technology projects
- Collaborate with CMRE climate-change, antisubmarine-warfare and data-environment projects
- Undertake research duties aboard Centre or chartered vessels and temporary-duty assignments when required
Role Requirements
- Expertise in quantum science and technology applications in the underwater or maritime domain for security or defence science
- Experience conducting quantum experimental activities focused on quantum communications and quantum photonics
- Experience in free-space or underwater quantum optics
- Master’s degree in physics, mathematics, engineering or a related technical field plus 5 years of post-Master’s experience, or a PhD in those fields plus 2 years of related experience
- Fit-for-sea certificate meeting IMO and ILO standards before taking up duty
- Thorough written and spoken knowledge of one NATO language at English SLP 3333 level

- Publication record in peer-reviewed international conferences and journals
- Experience working in multidisciplinary and international environments
- Capability to mentor or tutor students
- Experience interacting with high-level civilian or military decision makers
