Leads UNEP's Global Environment Facility portfolio on artisanal and small-scale gold and mercury mining, turning environmental priorities into well-governed projects and partnerships. Summary of Responsibilities
- Lead development and approval of projects on artisanal and small-scale gold and mercury mining
- Establish legal and operational delivery structures with executing agencies and project partners
- Supervise executing agencies against project results, expenditure targets and fiduciary standards
- Oversee work planning, budgeting and quarterly and annual project reporting
- Review technical outputs and agree corrective actions and adaptive management where needed
- Coordinate midterm reviews and terminal evaluations of GEF projects
- Provide technical guidance to UNEP mining projects and the High Impact Sector Team
- Integrate mining-portfolio evidence into publications, briefings and communication materials
Role Requirements
- Advanced degree in earth sciences, environmental sciences, environmental management, chemistry, metallurgy, engineering or economic and social studies, or a first-level degree with two additional years of qualifying experience
- Relevant training in project management
- At least five years of progressively responsible international experience related to minerals, mining and metals value chains
- Experience developing or implementing international environmental programmes in developing countries and managing sustainability or mining-pollution reduction projects
- Experience with the Global Environment Facility or an equivalent international project cycle
- Fluency in English
Desired Criteria
- Experience working with the private sector on upstream innovation and solutions for sustainable metals and mining value chains
- Experience in data analytics or a related area
