Indigenous Peoples Affairs Assistant

Supports OHCHR’s Burundi mandate to advance the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The consultancy conducts research, advocacy, monitoring and reporting; engages Indigenous organizations; supports inclusion in human-rights and development initiatives; coordinates events and capacity building; and prepares communication materials, advice and reports for the Senior Human Rights Adviser.

• Undertake research, advocacy, awareness-raising, monitoring and reporting on Indigenous Peoples’ rights
• Support implementation of OHCHR’s Burundi mandate and Management Plan activities
• Engage Indigenous organizations, including women’s and youth organizations, in capacity-building and awareness raising
• Promote inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in human-rights initiatives and programmes
• Coordinate webinars, workshops, meetings and other events on Indigenous Peoples’ rights
• Develop communication and awareness-raising materials
• Contribute to reports and advice on achievements, good practices and legal, political and factual issues
• Respond to OHCHR Headquarters information requests on Indigenous Peoples’ rights

• Completion of secondary education
• Good understanding and basic knowledge of international human rights instruments and mechanisms related to Indigenous Peoples’ rights
• Five years of relevant professional experience in Indigenous Peoples’ rights, human rights, community development or a related area
• Fluency in French and Kirundi, oral and written

• University degree in law, political science, international relations, human rights or another relevant field
• Experience in resource mobilization, communications, awareness raising, capacity building or training-tool development
• Membership in the Batwa Indigenous community
