Job Description

UNESCO seeks a D-2 Director in Montreal to lead the UNESCO Institute for Statistics as a global centre of excellence in data, analytics and statistical capacity development. The Director will set UIS strategy, manage its people and resources, represent UNESCO in high-level statistical forums and strengthen the Institute’s partnerships, outreach and contribution to UNESCO’s mandate.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Provide high-level managerial leadership and implement organizational and resource-mobilization strategies for UIS
  • Oversee human and financial resource management and assess planned programme outcomes
  • Anticipate risks, global trends and opportunities affecting the Institute’s development and impact
  • Lead UIS strategic vision for statistics across UNESCO’s mandate
  • Represent the Director-General at the United Nations Statistics Commission and other high-level meetings
  • Develop UIS communication and outreach strategy and strengthen links with UNESCO programmes
  • Foster an inclusive, high-performing culture of innovation, learning and knowledge sharing

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in statistics, demography, economics, mathematics, education or social sciences with substantial applied statistics
  • At least 15 years of progressively responsible statistical-management experience at national and international levels including senior executive positions
  • Leadership experience in planning and managing international programmes or projects
  • Demonstrated advocacy, resource-mobilization and partnership-development experience
  • Excellent English drafting skills

Desired Criteria

  • PhD in a relevant field
  • Management degree, diploma or course
  • Experience with education ministries, national statistics authorities and policy research institutions
  • Professional experience in a multicultural environment
  • Good knowledge of French and other UNESCO official languages
