Job Description

Leads UNICEF Sudan’s WASH programme in a complex humanitarian setting marked by conflict, displacement and damaged essential services. The chief directs strategic planning through delivery of programme results, manages the country-office WASH team, and ensures accountable, results-based implementation that advances emergency response, systems restoration, resilience and sector strengthening.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise all stages of the WASH programme from strategic planning and formulation to delivery of results
  • Lead and manage the country-office WASH team
  • Ensure WASH outcome and output results are achieved against plans and allocations
  • Apply results-based management approaches and methodologies across the WASH programme
  • Ensure implementation aligns with UNICEF’s Strategic Plan, performance standards and accountability framework
  • Direct WASH programming that responds to displacement, disease outbreaks and damaged water and sanitation systems
  • Advance restoration, resilience and systems strengthening where conditions permit

Role Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resources management, hydrology, public health, social science, behaviour change communication, international development or another relevant field
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in WASH-related programmes for developing countries
  • At least 2 years of deployment in a developing country with proven ability to lead a team
  • At least 2 years of work in a humanitarian context
  • Fluency in English

Desired Criteria

  • Additional postgraduate courses complementing the main degree
  • Experience with AfDB-, KfW- or World Bank-funded programmes
  • Experience in WASH cluster coordination and familiarity with CATS principles
  • Experience at country level in development, fragile settings or humanitarian contexts
